Thursday night, I went to hear Midori talk about sex culture in Japan. The perverati were out in force: Kate Bornstein & Barbara Carrellas, Michelle Serchuk, Betty Dodson, Laura Antonious, Morpheus (you need to be on his NYC Alt Events list), MayMay, Eileen and Lolita Wolf. Midori talked first about being a dual outsider , about Orientalism (that romantic notion of “the Orient”), and a view of Japanese kink that gaijin never get access to.She is petite, but spoke with tremendous verve and authority about love hotels, sex clubs, cosplay coffee shops, sex shops the size of U.S. supermarkets.It was a fascinating talk, but MoSex is a really uncomfortable venue. We were in the first floor gallery and the building had turned off the AC. Then there was the continuous rattling of some motor in the background, which was really distracting. Why would you turn off the AC? What does it say about the conservation practices of the museum? I guess there aren’t any.
Midori is coming to New York the weekend after Labor Day.

My friend Lolita Wolf has sent me me so many items for the Carnival, and I’ve cross linked her calendar so often, I thought it was time she should just be a contributor.
It’s an honor for the Carnival. Right before going to Dark Odyssey for the first time, I remember reading an old issue of Prometheus, the TES publication. There was a picture of Lolita receiving a lifetime achievement award. Now, I’m her ‘blog mommy.’
She is very patient with this novice. Just last night we were at the TES ‘Speed Bondage’ workshop taught by Lee Harrington. I admit I was a little intimidated, practicing single column ties and chest harnesses on her. She laughed, and chided me for not anchoring the chest ropes tightly enough (um, one was starting to choke her). Now, I’m thinking of attending Midori’s rope dojo this September.
