  • Grab Your Dick and Double Click : Librarian Hot – It should come as no surprise that I really enjoyed the Blue and Lust books, while I wanted to throw the Jensen and Paul books across the room (or out the window, or off of a really big cliff). I do agree with them about a few things: for one, that pornography addiction is real, and it can cause serious damage to relationships (as can, of course, any addiction or compulsive behavior). I also agree that most mainstream porn is indeed extremely misogynistic. But do you know what I find even more demeaning to women? Anti-porn crusaders’ tired gender essentialism arguments.
  • How the Media Should Treat the Sexual Assault Allegations Against Al Gore | The Nation – A handful of feminist blogs, including Feministing, precede me in decrying the media's haste to impugn the credibility of the accuser. As they rightly observe, almost all other media coverage of the story has given the rest of us permission to giggle, when what we really need is a sober dose of reality: that these are credible charges against a very powerful and influential man. It's in our shared interest to take them seriously, evaluate them based on whatever information comes to light and demand answers and accountability.
  • The New Abortion Providers – NYTimes.com – This abortion-rights campaign, led by physicians themselves, is trying to recast doctors, changing them from a weak link of abortion to a strong one. Its leaders have built residency programs and fellowships at university hospitals, with the hope that, eventually, more and more doctors will use their training to bring abortion into their practices. The bold idea at the heart of this effort is to integrate abortion so that it’s a seamless part of health care for women — embraced rather than shunned.
  • For Women, Social Media is More Than "Girl Talk" | Mashable – It turns out that sociolinguists have found women to be innovators when it comes to communication, especially with new forms of languages. … The practical benefits that social media affords, combined with its emotionally fulfilling features make it likely that women will not only continue to engage with social media, but with future related innovations, as well.

  • Making a Hot Mess out of “Feminist” TV | where is your line? – My experience in the hot seat of Hot Mess reminded me – like a slap in the face- a few basic media principles. As a filmmaker and producer, respect your subjects. They are not objects or props to be used or humiliated. Honor them. And as a subject and author of your life, remember – your story is your story. It is sacred, precious and individually yours. Find and maintain your boundaries about how and with whom you share your story. Call the shots and don’t forget you’re in control.
  • Federal Judge In Boston Rules Gay Marriage Ban Unconstitutional – The federal law banning gay marriage is unconstitutional because it interferes with the right of a state to define the institution and therefore denies married gay couples some federal benefits, a federal judge ruled Thursday in Boston.
  • Sex and Infertility – How infertility makes sex more difficult | Cory Silverberg – The impact of infertility (real or suspected) on your sex life can be enormous. Sex that is timed and filled with anxiety about the outcome quickly becomes mechanical and forced. What was once an intense expression of love, desire, and commitment can feel like an obligation, an expectation — and practically coercive.

  • Americans’ Acceptance of Gay Relations Crosses 50% Threshold (Gallup) – There is a gradual cultural shift under way in Americans' views toward gay individuals and gay rights. While public attitudes haven't moved consistently in gays' and lesbians' favor every year, the general trend is clearly in that direction. This year, the shift is apparent in a record-high level of the public seeing gay and lesbian relations as morally acceptable. Meanwhile, support for legalizing gay marriage, and for the legality of gay and lesbian relations more generally, is near record highs.

Sex 2.0 May 9, 2009

Sex 2.0 May 9, 2009

Now in our second year, Sex 2.0, a one-day unconference, will take place on May 9, 2009 in Washington, D.C. Sex 2.0 will focus on the intersection of social media, feminism, and sexuality. How is social media enabling people to learn, grow, and connect sexually? How is sexual expression tied to social activism? Does the concept of transparency online offer new opportunities or present new roadblocks — or both?  Sex 2.0 is an unconference, which means that sessions will be informal conversations organized by people attending the event. Session leaders with some knowledge in a subject area facilitate conversations among the participants.

Sessions will include: “Internet Advocacy for Sexual Freedom” with Ricci Joy Levy of the Woodhull Foundation; “Polyamory in Media’s Spotlight” with Anita Wagner; “Craigslist Red, Craigslist Blue: Why we should dismantle the “internet red light district” with Melissa Gira Grant and Joanne McNeill;  “Kick Ass Twitter Apps” with Cunning Minx; “Revenge Porn” with Maria Diaz; and “Sex Writing Beyond Erotica, Beyond Porn” with Jack Murnighan, Nerve.com editor-at-large. The keynote speaker will be Nikol Hasler, creator of the Midwest Teen Sex Show (http://midwestteensexshow.com). A complete list of sessions may be viewed at: http://sex20con.com/2009-schedule/sessions/

Sex 2.0 will be held in a Washington, D.C. hotel. (To ensure everyone’s privacy, location information will be email once you are registered). It will offer five conference rooms, a lounge (with free WiFi), vendor area as well as space for various sex-positive outreach groups to set up informational displays and tables.

The event is managed by volunteers and funded by sponsors. We are pleased to have SEXTOY.com as our presenting sponsor this year. SEXTOY.com has been focusing on building a relationship within the blogger community with the recent start-up of its sex toy reviewer program. SEXTOY.com is honored to be the official sponsor for Sex 2.0 and looks forward to a mutually rewarding relationship with the blogger Community.  Two SEXTOY.com associates will be attending Sex 2.0 this year: Erik Van Riper and Domina Doll; who both look forward to meeting everyone, attending the talks and participating in discussions. Sex 2.0 is also pleased to have community sponsor Bound Not Gagged, hospitality sponsor Kimberleecline.com and technology sponsor PosAlt.com supporting this years conference.

While the event itself is on Saturday, May 9, there are participant-organized meetups, outings, and parties being planned for Friday night and Saturday evening, as well as a Sunday brunch. For more information, visit the Sex 2.0 website at www.sex20con.com or follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/sex20con.

Sex 2.0 May 9, 2009

Sex 2.0 May 9, 2009

Sex 2.0 will focus on the intersection of social media, feminism, and sexuality. How is social media enabling people to learn, grow, and connect sexually? How is sexual expression tied to social activism? Does the concept of transparency online offer new opportunities or present new roadblocks — or both? These questions, and many more, will be addressed within a safe, welcoming, sex-positive space.

The first Sex 2.0 was a year ago, which came about because Amber Rhea had a vision. Last year’s Sex 2.0 was really energizing – an diverse group of sex nerds, bloggers, sex workers and writers, talking to each other (and Twittering all the while). We have the run at a really nice venue in Silver Spring, MD. And like last year, the out of town guests will be staying at the venue, so there will be a lot of hanging out, before during the after.

I’ll be doing a WordPress open Q&A with MayMay, so bring your questions about WordPress and blogging and we’ll do our best to answer them. There will be even more attendees this year who will be Twittering throughout the weekend. I’ll try to post a list soon.

The discounted registration of $30 (which was to have ended today), has again been pushed back to April 16th, so you have two more days to register at the lower rate. It’ll go up to $40.00.

The website is here: sex20con.com/

The Sex 2.0 Google Group is where all the discussion and organizing of the event (and the events before and after) is happening.

Feminist Carnival of Sexual Freedom and Autonomy

This sex positive carnival highlights posts/articles promoting the sexual rights and freedom of women:

This theory of feminism is known more commonly as Sex Positive Feminism, a movement that developed in the 1980s in response to feminists against pornography and prostitution. Sex Positive Feminists (or sex-radical, pro-sex or sexually liberated feminists) believe that women’s sexual freedom is an essential part of women’s autonomy. Any legal or social control or regulation over the sexual self is an attempt to control and regulate women, undermines their freedom and infringes upon their human rights. We are interested in promoting sex workers’ rights, sex education in schools, and we encourage the free expression of sexualities.

Sex Positive Feminists recognise that not all women choose to work within the sex industry and some are grossly exploited, so it is crucial to understand that sex work must be done consensually. Otherwise, it represents another form of control. We understand too that the opposite of sex positive is not necessarily sex negative. For more information about Sex Positive Feminism, click here.

The previous Carnival was hosted at Sugarbutch Chronicles. The upcoming Carnival will be hosted by Ellie Lumpesse. Please visit the Carnival homepage if you’re interested in participating in future editions.

Thank you to everyone who submitted. And now, on to this month’s posts.

Better Burn That Dress Sister: This is our job so recognise our rights…….
The adoption of the mantle of self righteous indignation by prohibitionists when they speak disparately of sex workers rights is both disingenuous and dangerous. They encourage the enforcement of bad laws now and support the adoption of more bad law with the intention, they claim, of protecting the vulnerable. If prohibitionists were honest they would admit that the intention of this bad law that denies sex workers rights, has nothing to do with protecting women and children or in stopping trafficking. The purpose of the persecution now, as in the past, is both to eliminate our work and alienate us from society. New proposals to criminalise clients and further target brothels are just more of the same.

Border Thinking on Migration, Trafficking and Commercial Sex: Will a famous prostitute be allowed to rest alongside Calvin in Geneva?
Grisélidis Réal was known for decades as a prostitute, author and defender of sex work’s uses and skills. She died and was buried a few years ago but now either will or will not be honoured by having her remains moved to a Geneva cemetery where cultural icons like Calvin are buried. The story below illustrates how such honours are interpreted in opposing ways by different people.

Clarisse Thorn: BDSM Outreach: “There is no ’should’” and the sex-positive “agenda”
What’s my “agenda”? What does it mean to be a “pro-BDSM activist”? What’s the “sex-positive agenda”? Who is part of the “sex-positive movement”? These are all questions I’ve been thinking about a lot lately — and they seem to constantly recur around the blogosphere, in varying forms. But here’s a question that’s rarely posed explicitly, and it’s the one that preoccupies me the most: What action can I take in the real world to help create a powerful, energetic sex-positive — and pro-BDSM — movement?

A Femanist View: On Art and Porn
I think we should reject that line, and insist that Porn is Art (how come the two brothers have never been seen in the same room at exactly the same time as each other? *smirk* ). Porn performers and producers, pole dancers and lap dancers, even (willing) prostitutes – yes, all sex workers – are artists and deserve to be recognised for it. Their individual arts are different from one another, just as a sculptor’s art is different from a painter’s, is different from a musician’s, is different from a dancer’s.

Feminist Review: AIDS Sutra: Untold Stories From India
Negar Akhavi has masterfully edited multiple voices and rhetorical devices to show us how HIV and AIDS have affected Indian society. Half the contributors traverse the deep faultlines of misogyny, poverty, and religious hierarchy. The other half shows what it’s like in India in the time of AIDS to be faithful wives and daughters-in-law (and HIV-infected), poor and low-caste, overburdened healthcare workers, cast-off and orphaned, and non-heterosexual.

Franklin Veaux’s Journal: Some thoughts on tattoos, porn, and respect for women
The term ‘tramp stamp,’ as clever as it sounds (“Oooh! It rhymes! It must be true if it rhymes! If the glove don’t fit, the tramp stamp sits!” Or something) betrays what seems to me to be a very interesting idea about women. It’s a short, simple, 21st-century slang term that packages sixteenth-century ideas about sex and sexuality in a handy, bite-sized piece.

Kidsanity: 14 Kids, 8 Babies, 3 Fingers, 1 Parent: The Math Of Nadya Suleman
What I saw was an articulate young woman who managed to keep her own anger at bay, who seemed understanding and forgiving of people who do not accept her decision, and was composed yet passionate as she tactfully mentioned her beliefs about the sanctity of life. But it was her earliest statements, regarding other large families, which seemed to lie at the root of all of the hullabaloo.

Paper Cuts and Plastic: Why I like to fuck in public
It’s much more about the juxtaposition of the normal around me with what’s going on in my pants. The fact that I can hear or see other people going about their day while I’m in the throes of sex makes me really hot. The vast difference between what I’m feeling and what everyone around me is seeing makes the sensations seem even more exciting and intense.

Relationship Underarm Stick: Puppies, Kittens & Vampires, Oh My!
The ultimate pinnacle in Bad Boys are vampires and other supernatural creatures. Not only are they dangerous and misunderstood, the big strong Bad Boy arms we want to swoon into, but there is no larger a separation than between living and dead, making these men the most unobtainable of all.

Renegade Evolution: Feminism, Sex, BDSM & Other Sore Subjects
I do not say everyone would, or should, or could enjoy what I enjoy. I do not expect, demand, or encourage them to do so unless it is what they actually enjoy. I do however encourage women to speak to and about their own desires, and damn the condemnation that comes with it…because I do think that is important, and I do think that- the speaking- is feminist.

Sabrina in Stockings: So I’m a feminist – and a misogynist?
It’s one thing to rebel against being spoonfed a stereotype as an ideal. It’s another thing to have obvious disgust for your gender (and most of these offending women are primarily gendered female, even if they do sometimes feel male inside; or at least, they express their gender as female).

Tell It WOC Speak
Welcome everyone to what I hope will be the first of many blog carnivals dedicated to the voices of women of colour and our allies.  In every sphere of life women of colour are marginalized and exploited. Often, when we attempt to engage to change our circumstances we are silenced.  This carnival is our attempt to give voice to our shared issues.

I want to be judged purely on the basis of my appearance.

I love it that men might think me attractive, because, like, that’s all that matters to me.

I feel validated if men want to fuck me: the more that do, the merrier.

I think it’s great that how I look is more important than what I have achieved.

I want to teach young girls that to get ahead in life, all they need is cosmetic surgery. They have to fight gravity and age; otherwise no man will ever want them! ( More . . ..)

China has received plenty of criticism for the poor working conditions, heavy pollution, and sometimes-dangerous products associated with its remarkable economic boom. Now it is getting praise for increasing gender equality.

A World Economic Forum study released today says China climbed 16 places, to No. 57, in an annual ranking of sexual parity in 130 countries around the world.

The study, called the Global Gender Gap Report 2008, ranks the social, political, and economic status of the sexes in each country, based on education, health statistics, job opportunities, income, and political participation. The results are expressed as a percentage to show how close women are to parity with men.

In the top-ranking nation, Norway, for example, women have 82 percent of the access to resources and opportunities that men enjoy; that’s 2 percentage points more than last year, when Norway was ranked No. 2. (more . . .)
