Playing with cultural trauma is one of those controversial activities. What’s “cultural trauma play”? This includes role play or fetishes around images or narrative of historical exploitation of peoples, ethnic conflicts, nationalist tensions, institutionalized racism, religious persecution, genocides and oppressions of groups.

Putting aside her usual goofy humor and irreverent levity, Midori discusses frankly and openly about her experience, insights, struggles and knowledgegained from playing with cultural trauma. Dress & Supplies: Wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. Bring a large towel or yoga mat if you¹d like to use the floor. And, of course, bring rope – the more, the merrier! RopeShare: Imagining Bondage

In this installment of RopeShare, we’ll empower your imagination while playing with rope. Working in teams, using techniques you’ve already learned, plus some new ones, you will invent your own bondage positions and ties, with the support and encouragement of your instructors and fellow participants.

We promise that you will be challenged and enriched by this experience!

Bring lots of rope of all sizes, whatever you’ve got. Also, bring any props you might want to use: poles, dildos, cloth, etc., and your safety scissors.

PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

Kinky people of all genders and orientations are welcome! Participants must be over 18.

TYUTUMI is a bondage enthusiast who has been teaching rope bondage since 2003. He received advanced training in Japanese-style bondage from Midori, and continues to study with her at every opportunity. A graduate of Midori’s Advanced Dojo, tyutumi also studied with well-known rope artists at Shibaricon. He was a member of Gay Men SM Activists (GMSMA) for many years, serving on its Program Committee and presenting a number of GMSMA programs and workshops. He is a longtime member of the New York Bondage Club and Delta International. He has presented bondage demos and classes at The Eulenspiegel Society (TES), GMSMA, Mid-Atlantic Leather (MAL), The Museum of Sex, RopeShare and Delta. tyutumi is the founder of the Rope Dojo of New York.

MASTER MIKE has been practicing Japanese rope bondage since 2006 and is a graduate of tyutumi’s shibari class. His proficiency as a roper prompted an invitation to join Tyutumi’s monthly rope dojo, and he has been a valued instructor at Rope Share. He holds a certificate from Midori’s intensive Rope Bondage workshop. Master Mike completed the six-month GMSMA novices special interest group in 2006 and was an active member of GMSMA until 2009. He enjoys teaching others what he knows about rope and creating imaginative, safe bondage scenes. Master Mike’s effectiveness as a rope instructor derives from his authority, humor, clarity and gentleness.

An evening of personal instruction with Midori

Three hours of concentrated private rope instructions to finesse your floor works skills with Midori. An evening designed for those tired of intro level rope classes … and seek more personalized instruction to get to the next level of ninja-like rope skills and scene creations.

Tops – Do you want to make your rope play more confident, smooth and intuitive? Have you encountered blocks in your play you want to over come? Do you want to learn cool and subtle tricks?

Bottoms – Want to work on going deeper and finding more pleasures?

Midori will work closely with each student to asses their needs and challenges. Based on each student’s needs she’ll provide the lessons, drills and exercises.

After the lesson there will be some fine Japanese refreshments and nosh to wind down the evening of rope pleasures and learning with socializing and conversations. Midori often ends up telling tales of adventure in Japan during these socials. (Sometimes lessons transition into play for some students during this social time. As long as you respect others’ space, Midori’s happy with that.)

WHO:
This experience will be limited to 5 pairs of students to create a environment of quality learning.  Please come as a pair. While you do not have to be a couple, you do need to have your exercise partner with you. This Dojo Elective is open to those who play at one or both ends of the rope.

You do not have to be a Rope Bondage Dojo graduate to attend.

- Ropes

- Yoga mat or beach towel (Optional)

WHEN:
Instruction starts at 7pm. Door opens 6:45pm.
Instruction ends 10pm and transitions to food and refreshments until midnight or so.

The Return of Rope Share

Rope Share is back!

This hands-on workshop will cover basics of rope handling, safety, and simple ties, and delve into harnesses, hogties and other topics depending on interest. Class size is kept to a small circle for friendly experimentation bondage and personal attention.

Men, Women, Trans, Welcome! Participants must be over 18.

Location: Greenwich St. (btwn Rector and Carlisle; three blocks south of the WTC site). The specific address will be emailed upon registration.
Instructors:  Tyutumi and Master Mike
Cost:  $25 per person

ROPE SHARE is a bondage workshop that is structured to fit your skill levels and interests. There are two highly skilled rope instructors. The attendance will be limited to 12 students.

BRING ROPE: 2 lengths of 25ft. rope; 1 length of 50ft. and a 10 ft. length; and safety scissors. Cotton, nylon, hemp, and jute are all fine.

When Is Bondage Prostitution? Records May Help Set Boundaries (New York Law Journal)

A Manhattan judge has ordered the New York City Police Department to shine a light on the hazy legal line separating bondage, domination and sadomasochism from prostitution.

In a decision last week, Supreme Court Justice Carol R. Edmead directed the NYPD to provide the Urban Justice Center’s Sex Workers Project with documents regarding police investigations of several Manhattan bondage, domination and sadomasochism clubs between 2006 and 2008.

The judge, however, ruled that the police department is not required to turn over a copy of a confidential Vice Enforcement Division manual, which sets forth the procedures used by undercover agents to identify, engage and arrest suspected prostitutes.

“Disclosure of this information…would ‘furnish the safecracker with the combination to the safe,’ as it would alert the potential violators of the prostitution laws to the unique factors and methods the undercover police officers are likely to use to communicate with the other members of the team,” Justice Edmead wrote in Urban Justice Center v. New York Police Department, 400988/2010 (Subscription reqd).

The Sex Workers Project, which provides legal services and policy advocacy for people who work in the sex industry—exotic dancers, dominatrices and pornography actors, among others—considers the contested documents essential to understanding how the NYPD interprets and enforces New York Penal Law 230.00, the single-sentence statute that prohibits engaging in “sexual conduct” for a fee, but fails to define “sexual conduct.”

Since NYPL 230.00 was enacted in 1969—”prostitution” had previously been treated as a form of vagrancy, according to the annotated McKinney’s Penal Law—the definition of “sexual conduct” has slowly been teased out by the courts. Homosexual intercourse is “sexual conduct,” courts have ruled, though “lap dancing” is not—so long as the person providing the lap does not touch the dancer’s naked breasts or buttocks.

The case law provides scant guidance regarding bondage, domination and “fetish for a fee” services. Only a single reported opinion, the 1994 Brooklyn Criminal Court decision People v. Georgia A., 163 Misc.2d 634, addresses whether such acts constitute prohibited “sexual conduct.”
