Sigurdur Hjartarson is missing a human penis. But he’s not worried: four men have promised to donate theirs to him when they die.

Hjartarson is founder and owner of the Icelandic Phallological Museum, which offers visitors from around the world a close-up look at the long and the short of the male reproductive organ.

His collection, which began in 1974 with a single bull’s penis that looked something like a riding crop, now boasts 261 preserved members from 90 species.

The largest, from a sperm whale, is 70 kg (154 lb) and 1.7 meters (5.58 ft) long. The smallest, a hamster penis bone, is just 2 mm and must be viewed through a magnifying glass.

One species conspicuous by its absence is homo sapiens, but that may soon be rectified since a German, an American, an Icelander and a Briton have promised to donate their organs after death, according to certificates on display.

The American, 52-year-old Stan Underwood, supplied a written description of his penis — which he purportedly nick-named “Elmo” — for display alongside a life-size plastic mould of the member as well as his pledge to donate it.

Hjartarson said the Icelandic donor, a 93-year-old from nearby Akureyri, was a womanizer in his youth who thought having his penis in the collection might bring him eternal fame.

But vanity may make him rethink the offer.

The interactive installation I Want You To Want Me, by Jonathan Harris and Sep Kamvar, commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art, for their “Design and the Elastic Mind” exhibition. (It runs Feb. 14 to May 12 at MOMA.)

I Want You To Want Me explores the search for love and self in the world of online dating. It chronicles the world’s long-term relationship with romance, across all ages, genders, and sexualities, using real data collected from Internet dating sites every few hours.

I’ll probably go the weekend before it closes. Ping me if you want to come along.

sex 20 This weekend: Sex 2.0 in Atlanta

Sex 2.0 will focus on the intersection of social media, feminism, and sexuality. How is social media enabling people to learn, grow, and connect sexually? How is sexual expression tied to social activism? Does the concept of transparency online offer new opportunities or present new roadblocks — or both? These questions, and many more, will be addressed within a safe, welcoming, sex-positive space.

Respecting the confidentiality and protecting the identities of participants who wish to maintain a degree of anonymity will be a top priority at Sex 2.0.

When? April 12, 2008
Where? 1763~A Deviant Place of Decadence, 1763 Montreal Circle, Tucker, Ga., 30084 (directions)

I’m going to be bookmarking pertinent sites at del.icious: http://del.icio.us/viviane with the Sex2.0 tag.

07sex xlarge1 Two posts/articles about the Museum of Sex

(Photo: Michael Nagle for The New York Times)

New York Times cultural critic Edward Rothstein has a lengthy exhibition review of the ‘Kink’ show:

What seems needed, in fact, is for the museum to evolve from being a bit like a fetish into something more like a kink. Right now it seems an end in itself — a place where you can gawk at practices and objects that offer titillation and sensation, replacing familiar reality with another. If it were more like a kink, it would do more to enhance perceptions of the world beyond its walls, offering more vigorous interpretations of its objects, and provide a weird window through which this powerful and mysterious aspect of human experience might be better understood.

Audacia Ray, who helped open MoSex, reflects on the 5th anniversary of the Museum:

In San Francisco, despite it’s consistent problems with acquiring and securing space, the Center for Sex and Culture is truly at the center of things. Founders Carol Queen and Robert Lawrence are active members and supporters of a vast array of sexual communities. The Museum of Sex does has no such people and does no such thing, and that’s pretty sad, a lost opportunity. Though I’m no longer waging bets about how long the museum will continue to keep its doors open (I did, once upon a time, make bets like that), I do think it’s a serious bummer that the museum hasn’t made more of an effort to integrate itself into the various communities in New York, and furthermore, that communities built around sexuality in NYC don’t see the museum as an immediate ally and first choice as a venue or support organization for various endeavors. That in itself says volumes about the museum’s place in the sexual landscape of this city.

Thursday night, I went to hear Midori talk about sex culture in Japan. The perverati were out in force: Kate Bornstein & Barbara Carrellas, Michelle Serchuk, Betty Dodson, Laura Antonious, Morpheus (you need to be on his NYC Alt Events list), MayMay, Eileen and Lolita Wolf. Midori talked first about being a dual outsider , about Orientalism (that romantic notion of “the Orient”), and a view of Japanese kink that gaijin never get access to.She is petite, but spoke with tremendous verve and authority about love hotels, sex clubs, cosplay coffee shops, sex shops the size of U.S. supermarkets. It was a fascinating talk, but MoSex is a really uncomfortable venue. We were in the first floor gallery and the building had turned off the AC. Then there was the continuous rattling of some motor in the background, which was really distracting. Why would you turn off the AC? What does it say about the conservation practices of the museum? I guess there aren’t any.

Friday I went to see the Summer of Love exhibit with Lolita, Michelle & Delano, and Ace of Hearts. Photography wasn’t allowed in the exhibit, but I snuck these shots, using available light. People had varying reactions. For some it was too much pop culture. Lolita sang and danced her way through the exhibit. For me, it was one long nostalgia trip. The show ends 9/16.

wildsidesex 4 Midoris New York Tour

Midori is coming to New York the weekend after Labor Day.

She’s holding her famed rope bondage Rope Dojo for the first time in NYC on September 8-9. It’s sold out, but you can get on the waiting list (I am – one can always hope).

On Wednesday, 9/5 she’s teaching CBT for the Adventurous at Purple Passion. She will share clever and sadistic ways that she likes to play with the family jewels. Not for absolute beginners.

On Thursday, 9/6, she’ll be at the Museum of Sex, talking about Pink Japan: Contemporary Sex Culture:

From cuisine, music, fashion, technology to anime, Japan’s cultural influence on the West is immense. In many ways the Japanese erotic cultures are also influencing today’s Western tastes. Yet the daily realities of Japan’s gender relations, sexual habits, sexual consumer culture and gay/lesbian/transgendered world remain hidden to us, creating an aura of mystique. In this funny and insightful talk, join Midori for a double-expatriate’s photo tour of Japan’s hidden sexual culture today.

On Friday, 9/7, she’ll be speaking at the Lesbian Sex Mafia on Beyond Twisted: Permutations of Kinkiness:

A sadist must of course be a dominant. A submissive must of course be a masochist. Right? Wrong! Come along as Midori explodes the standard definitions of kink roles and expands the idea of what kink is all about. In Beyond Twisted, she maps out a fine-tuned and flexible framework that anyone can use to help describe their deviant desires. And as we all know, that’s the first step to fulfilling them! This is a class for those who don’t quite fit into the standard boxes…and for anyone who’s curious about their own possibly untapped potential!

(Note: LSM events are open to all women 18 years of age or older; this includes transgendered women, as well as transgendered men who were born as women.)

I’ve got my ticket for her MoSex talk, and am going to try and get to the LSM meeting. See you there? Thanks to Seraphin and Lolita for the info and the corrections.

img 1449 Back home from Blogher and Chicago

(Lisa Williams of Placeblogger, Liz Rizzo of BlogHer & Rachel Kramer Bussel at the closing cocktail party at the Children’s Museum. More pics here.)

BlogHer was amazing. Meeting in person and spending time with brilliant bloggers and the dinners with the viviacious and engaging sex bloggers was amazing (sorry I can’t help being redundant). I think every other word out of my mouth was “awesome!”I have enough schwag (thumb drive, AOL laptop bag, toiletries, cereal, potholder) that I had to sit on my suitcase to close it. Great panels, great discussions both in session and in the hallways.

IMHO the schwag of the conference was AAG’s assemblage of sex toys at her panel (thank you J.T.’s Stockroom, Tantus Silicone, Afterglow, Devine and NJoy!). She brought 40 bags and lots of people were saying later they wished they had attended. I got a bag, but gave it to Blogher co-founder Elisa Camahort. The next day, she jokingly suggested there should be a BlogHer branded dildo. No problem, Elisa.

I brought a ton of smut of Chicago, which we didn’t have time to watch. But, Saturday night, a bunch of us trooped back to the W Hotel and we watched Passion and Power: The Technology of Orgasm. Based on the book by Rachel Maines, it interviews her, Betty Dodson, Dell Williams and others about the development of the vibrator. We (Rachel, Amber, Rusty, Susan, Lisa Williams, Amy and I) agreed that the overall the film and the interviews were really good. The repeated use of the metaphoric imagery (fireworks, lightning, swimming jellyfish) for scene transitions was a bit much, as was the tilting of the screen frame, superimposed against the antiquey background (I was tilting my head to watch it). Audacia has a writeup about the screening and panel discusison at the Walter Reade Theater. See it if you can.

And I’m kind of tired. 14 hours of talking, schmoozing, eating, typing, and Twittering 4 days in a row can do that to you. But it was gobsmackingly wonderful to meet in person Amber, Rusty, AAG, Susie Bright, and Cunning Minx. Susie, would you be my fairy godmother!? There were never less than 7 people each night at dinner. I regret there were so many bloggers and sex bloggers I didn’t get to meet.

The OpenSpace that my pal Susan Mernit and I conducted was what we hoped it would be and was a really good discussion. She taught me to use the word takeaway to describe learning, and not food and can sleep through anything, thank God.

AOL sponsored a lunch with their coaches, and AAG and I attended the lunch with the adorable and smart Ian Kerner.

The travel OTOH, was a nightmare. Did you know, if you use miles for a trip and don’t use the outbound leg, the return trip gets cancelled? I do now. But thanks to Susan, I learned about the aggreagator Kayak.com. The tally:

  • Two cancelled flights
  • 2 standby lists
  • 3 cab rides
  • Twice my suitcase was lost or misdelivered
  • 1 cracked watch crystal
  • 1 lost laptop ac/battery charger
  • 1 Steve Winwood sighting. He was on the flight I was trying to get on.

I’m not sure how much more I’ll write about BlogHer. I posted a lot of links to del.icio.us (they are now set up to show here as a daily post) and have more to post, so you can get an idea of the bloggers I met and sites mentioned. There’s another Flickr set to post but I lost the power cord to my laptop. And updates on Twitter. I will do a roundup this weekend.

Plus I’m still playing with the blog. I removed “Recent Comments’ because it doesn’t live well with the Pictobrowser – it threw the entire template off and posts ended up after the template. I’ll repost those albums tonight.

There’s a ton of stuff coming up. A tea party in August. An overdue review of Audacia’s Naked on the Internet. Still undecided about Floating World. (registration ends Aug. 5th). Registering for Dark Odyssey summer camp. And Suzanne Portnoy is coming next month.
