  • L.A.’s porn Mistake | Lorelei Lee (Salon.com) – What performers like Hartley and I are equally opposed to is being condescended to by hypocritical zealots like Weinstein and Lubben who are obviously motivated by a concern for something other than our health and safety. Who have, in fact, shown a “blatant disregard” for the health and safety of industry workers by making it more difficult for us to use the protections we already have in place when their actions led to the closure of AIM.
  • Making a Fist of It: The Law and Obscenity | Freedom in a Puritan age – On Friday 6 January 2012, a historic case came to a conclusion in Courtroom 7 of Southwark Crown Court. Michael Peacock was unanimously acquitted, after a four-day trial that saw the outdated obscenity law of England and Wales in the dock…Peacock had been charged under the Obscene Publications Act 1959 for allegedly distributing ‘obscene’ ‘gay’ DVDs, which featured fisting, urolagnia (‘watersports’) and BDSM.
  • Ask Tristan: Sex Toys and the Law • Pucker Up – [Ed. note: For this question, I turned it over to my legal expert, Davis from Sexquire.] So what does all of this litigation mean to sex shop clerks? First, unless you are in Alabama, you have no reason to fear being arrested on obscenity charges for providing sex education about or selling these products as other than novelties.
  • Porn Star Activist Jiz Lee Talks About When and How Sex Workers Can Give Consent – San Francisco Art – The Exhibitionist – The ethics of consent is becoming a hot, vital topic of discussion in alternative sexuality communities. While talking about consent is something that never quite goes away, especially in BDSM communities, a lot of the dialogue doesn’t stray much beyond making sure that everyone is over 18 and knows his or her safeword. A few months ago, local activist bad-asses Maggie Mayhem and Kitty Stryker talked to us about their attempts to speak openly about abuse in BDSM and build “consent culture.” As they prepare to take those ideas on a cross-country tour, plenty of other people are continuing the conversation here in the Bay Area.
  • Kate Bornstein reading excerpt from her new book, “A Queer and Pleasant Danger”
  • The Case of Loving v. Bigotry – Slide Show – NYTimes.com – “In 1958, Richard & Mildred Loving were arrested in a nighttime raid in their bedroom by the sheriff of Caroline County, Va. Their crime: being married to each other. The Lovings…were ordered by a judge to leave Virginia for 25 years. The International Center of Photography is mounting a show of Grey Villet’s photographs of the couple in 1965 (January 20-May 6, 2012).
  • Eric Holder Expands FBI’s Narrow, Outdated Definition Of Rape- MANCHESTER, N.H. — U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has revised the way the FBI defines rape, the first update to the federal definition in nearly a century. The FBI’s Uniform Crime Report has defined rape as the “carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will.” This definition was narrower than the one used by many police departments around the country, and women’s rights advocates said it led to the under-counting of thousands of sexual assaults each year.
  • Rape definition broadened to include men | CNN – The crime of rape will now be defined as “penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim,” the Justice Department said.

I saw David Ives’  brilliant play based on the erotic novel, “Venus in Fur” when it played at the Classic Stage Company last year. The demand for the play was so intense, the run was extended twice.  What starts out as an audition for the play about the kinky lovers, slowly and relentlessly evolves as fantasy gradually becomes reality. It also introduced us to the amazing new actor, Tony Award nominee Nina Arianda, who went on to win several awards for this role and also for her work in “Born Yesterday.”

Now it’s opening on Broadway, at the Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC), and will have a limited run until December 18th. British  actor Hugh Dancy will be playing the role of the director originally played by Wes Bentley. Hugh Dancy can also be seen treating women for hysteria with vibrators in Hysteria.

I’m curious to see what the chemistry between Dancy and Arianda will be like. Whether you love theater, or kink, or both, you should really try and see it.  The video is from the photoshoot for the new play.

Indigo is a black poly kinky feminist queer dyke; writer, teacher, artist and aspiring sex education/blogger. She’s about liberating the woman, questioning the man and fantasizing about all folks in between. I read, question, wonder, write and hope the art leads the way. Her blog, Indigo’s Theory, explores being in a loving poly relationship, having sex in great spaces, learning to love herskin, belly, hair, etc. and coming into her kinky queer self.

Miss Topaz is Dean of Nightlife at Miss Vera’s Finishing School For Boys Who Want To Be Girls. She worked for many years as a Legal Assistant for the American Civil Liberties Union, where she was very active in promoting the rights of all minorities: women, people of color, gays and lesbians and the transgendered community. Today, she focuses her attention largely on working and playing with gender illusionists. She was recently in a serious relationship with a cross-dresser for two years, and believes that she, herself, is a drag queen trapped in woman’s body. She is also a cabaret singer and performance artist, and frequently appears as Marlene Dietrich in drag. She was recently interviewed by Annie Sprinkle about her wild and diversified forays into sex, for the magazine Over 50. Her short story, Life is Stanger Than Fiction, won third prize in a TES literary contest and was published its magazine, Prometheus. The story focused on a serendipitous blind date with a cross-dresser.

Lisa Michelle Jones was born in Dallas and raised in a conservative East Texas town from which she escaped as soon as possible. She earned a BA in Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, where she discovered feminist literature, Anne Sexton, Lucille Clifton, and the short story genre. In addition to writing, she sang with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee choir at Carnegie Hall in a 1996 production of Brahm’s “Ein Deutsches Requiem.” Two months before her 30th birthday, she moved to NYC for the first time and never looked back. Lisa finds pleasure in writing erotica, short fiction, poetry, and essays. Her literary mentors are Sylvia Plath, Vita Sackville-West, Raymond Carver, Carole Maso, Jay McInerney, and Herman Melville. She currently lives in NYC where she enjoys dating, mating, satiating…and rhyming.

D. L. King is a smut writing — and editing –New Yorker who lives somewhere between the Wonder Wheel at Coney Island and the Chrysler Building. The editor of Carnal Machines: Steampunk Erotica,Spank!, The Sweetest Kiss: Ravishing Vampire Erotica and the Lambda Literary Award Finalist, Where the Girls Are: Urban Lesbian Erotica, D. L. The Floating World of 17th-century Japan was a pleasure district. Its visitors enjoyed an unprecedented level of sexual freedom, unbound by gender or class. Our 21st-century Floating World aims to create a similar space — a space of safety and freedom, the ideal environment in which to explore.

The Floating World is three full days of classes, workshops, and panel discussions, alongside a marketplace brimming with toys and clothes to excite and entice. At night, our playspace opens to its full capacity, including special events hosted by our diverse participating groups.

The Floating World assembles several of the finest organizations in the alt-sex realm, each with its unique experience, and encourages all comers to build bridges, create friendships and share knowledge; we make each other stronger by strengthening our common ground.

We invite you to explore who you are, and who you can be. Experience pleasure in a playspace roomy enough to accommodate the strongest passion and the wildest idea. Learn from the country’s top educators — and from each other.

THE PLAYSPACES

We have 100,000 square feet dedicated to play alone – one of the biggest playspaces in the world. You’ll find almost a hundred pieces of gear, 28’ ceilings for our multiple suspension frames, 10,000 square feet dedicated just to pony play, plenty of space to swing an 8’ whip…space for the biggest of your heart’s desires. Yes: there is space to wrestle, special space for fire and wax play, to roll around in a puppy cage, get out your coloring books, or stage a gang bang…the list goes on and on.

THE MARKETPLACE

An event of this kind needs an exceptional vending area, a place where you can explore, try out or try on toys, clothing and fetish items from all over the world. Online is fine – but there’s nothing like holding a first class flogger and meeting the person who made it, or getting your leatherware custom fit by one of the country’s leading experts.

Urban Tantra: Sacred Sex for the 21st Century

Urban Tantra® is a radically updated Tantra practice for modern sexual and spiritual explorers. It can be used anywhere and by everyone—inexperienced, young, old, queer, edgy, timid, differently-abled, tattooed—you name it. Tantra is not only a sexual practice, it also is a sensuous way of life and a path to spiritual growth and fulfillment. On the Tantric path, pleasure, vision and ecstasy are celebrated and can be as available in everyday life as they are in peak sexual experiences. In this workshop, you’ll learn Tantric techniques for intense full-bodied orgasms, amazingly deep, heart-centered connections (with a partner or with yourself), and the bliss that comes when your spiritual and sexual paths are one.
This workshop is for both couples and singles. All genders and sexual preferences are welcome. There will be no nudity and no explicit sexual touch.

Special note: Barbara will be teaching the breath and energy orgasm technique featured on The Learning Channel’s “Strange Sex” program in this workshop.

  • Control Tower by Mistress Matisse – The Stranger – Because being a nerd—especially if one participates in nerd culture around things like comic books, science fiction/fantasy, RPGing, etc.—is excellent training for becoming an active member of the BDSM community. The young nerd, shunned by the elite, perforce becomes accustomed to hanging around other nerds and social outcasts of all types. Nerds thus develop a high tolerance for socially nonconforming people and come to feel that such individuals are, by definition, nicer and more interesting than the Cool Kids. They embrace being weird, in other words.
  • Majoring in Kink | The Eye – I’m at the semester’s first meeting of Conversio Virium, Columbia’s BDSM, or kinky sex, education group, witnessing famed fetishist Dov demonstrate “rough body play,” or “thug play.” The demonstration is instructional, with an emphasis on avoiding actual bodily harm, but it’s easy to forget this as Dov maneuvers her onto the floor, grip strong, demonstrating an impressive and creative repertoire of ways to twist her body and apply force.
  • The Cambridge Porn Debate Story « The Sexademic – I waited to hear what I knew would be many misrepresentations of the porn industry as well as false data. It came rather quickly when she stated that the average age of internet porn exposure was 11.
  • Sex, Law, and Cinema in the Digital Age (1989-2010) – James Fallows – Personal – The Atlantic – On that cheery note, here’s my survey of the key social, legal, cinematic, and technological moments of the last 22 years, with my take on how they delivered us (and by “us” I mean “me”) to where we are now.

Roadmaps of ConsentI fucking love consent. I love safewords. I can be much more cruel, and push much harder, if I trust my partner to tell me when I go too far.

Staying SafeOne cock, from one man, missing one condom, ultimately led to my brother’s death. And that sucks.

Flying the Friendly SkiesOne button on her sweater was undone, there was a rip in her hose, scratches on her boots, and her hair was carelessly pinned back with stray wisps of hair escaping. There was a curious flavor of soiling about her, something a bit dirty and unkempt.

Erotic asphyxiation: treatments of kink in therapy and the media - Kink and BDSM practitioners often come to an enhanced understanding of their own desires through the emphasis on personal boundaries and communicative consent which arises from a responsible approach to power and pain play.

WorryI’ve been thinking about rape culture more than ever before. On the outside, much of K’s and my play looks like sexual abuse. It’s not, because consent is always central.

The Leather Archives & Museum is seeking to compile resources about fetishes that we don’t usually hear about. We hope to expand our collections to cover a wider range of alternative sexualities.

We are interested in anything that has to do with unusual fetishes — objects, stories, pornography, erotica, websites, conversations — really, anything! Fetishes we don’t have much experience with include feet, fursuits, amputations, robots, dolls, balloons, tentacles, sneezing, crushing objects — but there are simply too many fetishes in the world for a comprehensive list.

We at the Leather Archives & Museum have plenty of experience with coming to terms with unusual sexual desires. Our goal is not to exoticize alternative sexuality, nor do we intend to shame anyone who discusses alternative sexuality with us. Our goal is to preserve the history of alternative sexuality — all alternative sexuality.

We respect your privacy. Anything you send us or tell us can be kept under your real name or a pseudonym, as you prefer.
The point person for this project is Clarisse Thorn, who can be reached by email at  clarisse at leatherarchives dot org. You can also leave her a voice message if you call the Leather Archives at 773.761.9200.

ABOUT THE LA&M: The Leather Archives & Museum is devoted to preserving the history of alternative sexuality. By sharing your experience with the Leather Archives & Museum, you will be helping us document sexual practices that are not widely recorded or understood. The Leather Archives & Museum is located at 6418 N. Greenview Avenue in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL, USA; you can visit the website at www.leatherarchives.org.

cinekink300x200 Cinekink: ChicagoCINEKINK: CHICAGO … THIS WEEKEND!

We’ll be wrapping up our 2010 tour on Friday-Saturday, November 19-20, as “the kinky film festival” makes one last, grand splash in Chicago!

With screenings at the Leather Archives and Museum, CINEKINK: CHICAGO will offer a specially-curated program of films and videos that celebrate and explore a wide and exciting world of sexual diversity, with works ranging from documentary to drama, comedy to experimental, mildly spicy to rather explicit – and everything in between.

FRIDAY – 8 pm
The festival kicks off on Friday, November 19th at 8 pm with the CineKink audience choice award-winner, S&M JUDGE, a compelling drama in which a respected judge finds his job, reputation and family life in jeopardy after he and his wife begin to explore sadomasochism.

An opening night reception for CineKink: Chicago will immediately follow this screening, made possible by the support of our friends at Shibaricon.

SATURDAY – 2 pm

On Saturday at 2 pm, MY SEXUALITY: A SENSORY EXPERIENCE shines light on five ordinary women from different backgrounds, sexual preferences and past experiences as they experiment with activities intended to boost both sense of self and sexuality. Afterwards, a panel discussion on women, representations of sexuality and sex-positive filmmaking will feature Leah Eva, who appears in the documentary, filmmakers Julie Keck and Jessica Kink (‘Libidoland’), and educator/activist Clarisse Thorn.

SATURDAY – 4:30 pm
At 4:30 pm, playing with the hit short, THE SHEEP AND THE RANCH HAND, the “boylesque” sensation WAXIE MOON takes the world of neo-burlesque by storm in a thought-provoking and hilarious documentary look at one artist’s unlikely journey.

SATURDAY – 6:30 pm
At 6:30 PM, the film shorts program YES, MISTRESS–including works by several Chicago filmmakers–asks (and sometimes answers!) the question: “How may I be of service?” The films in the mix include:
** Anti-Samaritan Hotline
** The Pawn Layman
** Girls Rock
** Taxi, Episode One: Domme
** Trampling MX-Bear
