  • Samuel Steward’s Life in ‘Secret Historian’ – NYTimes.com – When the author Justin Spring finally tracked down the executor of Samuel Steward’s estate, he had no idea what this sexual outlaw and little-known literary figure had left behind after his death in 1993…So he was taken unawares by the 80 boxes full of drawings, letters, photographs, sexual paraphernalia, manuscripts and other items, including an autograph and reliquary with pubic hair from Rudolph Valentino, a thousand-page confessional journal Steward created at the request of the sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, and a green metal card catalog labeled “Stud File,” which contained a meticulously documented record on index cards of every sexual experience and partner — Rock Hudson, Thornton Wilder, “One-eyed Sadist” — that Steward said he had had over 50 years.

    Primetime programming on the five broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC) was evaluated as well as 10 highly-rated cable networks (A&E, ABC Family, FX, HBO, Lifetime, MTV, Showtime, TBS, TNT and USA). Based on the analysis, a grade was assigned to each network: Excellent, Good, Adequate, or Failing.

  • Vibrator Use Among Gay and Bi Identified Men – About.com Guide to Sexuality Cory Silverberg highlights findings by scientist Michael Reece, who recently published data about vibrating sex toy use among gay and bisexual men. "Along with Debby Herbenick and colleagues at Indiana University's Center for Sexual Health Promotion, Reece has managed to find the funding and time to conduct basic research on sex toy use that has long been needed," Cory writes.
  • Gay Workers Will Get Time to Care for Partner’s Sick Child – NYTimes.com – The new ruling indicates that an employee in a same-sex relationship can qualify for leave to care for the child of his or her partner, even if the worker has not legally adopted the child.<br />

    The ruling, in a formal opinion letter, tackles a question not explicitly addressed in the 1993 law. It is one of many actions taken by the Obama administration to respond to the concerns of gay men and lesbians within the constraints of the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman as husband and wife.

Thank sociologist Pepper Schwartz, who, in her 1983 book American Couples, asserted that lesbians have less sex and intimacy than other couples.   • Can a Pill Help Women Reach Orgasm? – Barbara Kantrowitz – Newsweek.com – Canner hit on the topic after years of doing documentaries on subjects like human-rights abuses, police brutality, and poverty. Looking for something more upbeat, she was researching female sexuality when she got a call from the pharmaceutical company Vivus, which wanted her to create erotic videos to use in their clinical study of an “orgasm cream” for women.
  • Good Vibrations And The Clitoris Saving Alien Cult: News: SFAppeal – The furor boiled to the rim when in late March, Good Vibes got angrily and publicly called out by a feminist Facebook group, a professor of African politics at USF, feminist email lists and a significant number of sexual health professionals and sex educators in multiple countries. Why? It seems that the venerable retailer, with its reputation and history for championing empowered female sexuality, had publicly aligned its brand with, and intended to raise money for an organization called Clitoraid.

SexEdEverywhere: Vote in IWHC’s Young Visionaries Contest

My pals MayMay and Emma have entered the Young Visionaries Contest being run by the International Women’s Health Coalition (IWHC). The contest winner receives a $1,000 USD grant to fund a project that will create lasting change in the world and advocate for the rights and health of women and young people worldwide.

Their project proposal called SexEdEverywhere, involves creating a new media campaign and network of educational websites based on the premise that we learn about sex in many locations and from a variety of sources, not just health class in schools. The funding and recognition from the IWHC can seriously help their vision a reality.

Having been involved with helping organize Kinkforall(s) and been a guest on KinkonTap a few times, I know they are extremely passionate about, and extremely competent at,  spreading knowledge and helping educate young people about sex and sexuality.

A Call for Bisexual Artists

Bisexual Artists is seeking artists who identify as Bisexual (or with a label inclusive of bisexuality, such as Pansexual, Fluid, Omnisexual, Ambisexual or Queer), to submit paintings, drawings, photographs, prints, or sculptures relating to their experiences of living as a bisexual person. This project is an opportunity for artists to represent what being bisexual means to them and to help promote the wide variety of people who are bisexual.

Hangable works will be limited to 8′ in height and 6′ in length. Sculptures will be limited to a base of 2′ by 2′, with a height no greater than 8′. Works may be either pre-existing work or work created specifically for the event. There should also be a paragraph description of the content of the work and how it relates to issues of bisexuality, bisexual identities and/or bisexual visibility (no more than 500 words).

Artists selected for the exhibition will have their work on display in the San Francisco art gallery of Good Vibrations on Polk Street from Thursday October 8th 2009 thru Thursday, November 26th 2009.

Research Survey:African American and Hispanic lesbian and bisexual women’s experiences

Do you identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, bi-curious, queer, questioning, or otherwise same-sex attracted? Are you of African American or Latina descent? Are you age 18 and older? Even if you prefer not to label yourself, we are interested in your experience!

I am a doctoral student at Emory University conducting research on attitudes about sexual identity and community held by same-sex attracted women of African American or Latina descent

Participation involves the completion of an online questionnaire and will take approximately 30 minutes of your time.

Hi, everyone,
For all you students and friends of students out there, I wanted to let you know about an incredible scholarship opportunity. The Point Foundation is the national LGBT scholarship organization, and they do amazing work. They give financial and other types of support to LGBT scholars from around the country — in fact, I wouldn’t be in school right now without their help.

If you are currently a grad student or an undergrad, or are planning to enter school next year, (or if you know someone in any of those categories), consider applying for a Point Foundation scholarship. They are especially looking to reach out to bisexual students, and have asked me to help spread the word in the bi community.

There are a number of sexual-orientation-based scholarships out there — but most are only for gays and lesbians. Bisexuals are often excluded from being able to apply. But Point is different. Point is one of the few that actually includes bisexuals, too! That’s really important, especially considering that bisexuals tend to make less money than gays and lesbians — many of us need all the financial help we can get to make it through school.

Revolution No. 8 (The Advocate)

“Gays should protest black people! The new conflict is gays vs. blacks, and blacks vs. gays. And black gays vs. themselves. It’s gonna be great.” — Stephen Colbert

I’ve been waving a sign on street corners since H8 passed: “Black Queers.” Responses have varied — from honks of support to looks of disapproval from blacks and whites. A black woman came up to me at a rally and asked me if I didn’t think the sign was offensive to black people. She looked around as if there were a person in charge of things like this, someone who could head-nod in disagreement.

I said, “It’s who I am, and people should know,” flipping it over to reveal another slogan: “We Do Exist.” When I carry the sign in the middle of a crowd, it faces in and then out, equally interchanged — a message to my communities.

I need my LGBT community to support my efforts, while it understands at the same time that there are discriminations that only people of color face. Perhaps we’ve all spent too long creating separate “safe spaces.” We need to get uncomfortable in our skin so we can grow new ones fully free of internal bigotries. It’s been unfortunate to see “Gay Is the New Black” and similar signs springing up during rallies. Or hearing comments like “What is this? A Latino rally or gay rights? Why are they chanting in Spanish?”

The truth remains: People of color have fought for civil rights in the past and still fight. People of color have the most experience changing hearts and minds over generations, and the same must happen for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community — so why not find the overlapping pieces as key to solving the puzzle?
