Tantra for Erotic Empowerment is an instructional book that focuses on the erotic possibilities of  Tantric Sex, written by life partners Mark A. Michaels and Patricia Johnson, a “devoted married couple who have been teaching Tantra and Kriya yoga together since 1999″ .  Unlike many other books I have read on the subject of Tantra, this book teaches the spiritual quest for enlightenment in its most ancient form, rather than the watered-down versions you normally see for Western culture.  This doesn’t mean that the book is overly esoteric or the concepts difficult to grasp, as Michaels and Johnson explain the aspects of Tantra in the most elementary terms.  It is however, a healthy tome, with a wealth of information on sexuality, sexual spirituality, pleasure, desire, meditation, energy, bliss, transformation and union: basically everything your need to begin your Tantric journey as a novice, or expand upon the teachings you have already learned as an experienced practitioner.  In other words, this is not a quick study guide.  In fact, it has taken me many weeks to read from cover to cover, a rewarding experience that was well worth every word.  The authors actually recommend using the book by reading one chapter per week and then practicing what you have learned, which is the best way to approach this book.

The text features a foreword by Tristan Taormino, fifty-two exercises to do yourself solo or with your partner, multiple illustrations and photographs of Michaels and Johnson showing the various positions, as well as a complete glossary to help you understand all the terminology.  It is also written to be inclusive to all genders and sexual persuasions.

What is best about this book is that the authors use many of their own experiences as a practical guide to inform the reader and guide you on your spiritual quest of sexual enlightenment and pleasure.  It covers all aspects of sexual spirituality and has information both valuable to novices and those already knowledgeable in the art of Tantra.

This is certainly one of the best and most thorough books I have read on  Tantra, which is sure to help anyone interested in these topics enhance their sexual pleasure and intimacy together, as well as guide them on the path to their own sexual and spiritual awakening.

Sex, Magick and Spirit by Bonnie L. Johnson and Peter L. Schuerman (Llewellyn Publications 1998) is a practical guide for those who want to explore the ancient mysteries of Sacred Sexuality.  Although it is an older book (1998) on tantra, it is not dated and the information is just as useful now as when I first got the book.  Of course, Tantra itself is an ancient practice, and Johnson and Schuerman’s book makes it accessible to modern-day readers.

Combining their knowledge and experience of Eastern Tantra and Western sex magic, Johnson and Schuerman offer easy to follow methods and techniques designed to explore the esoteric aspects of sexuality.  The book is written in a clear, precise language, including illustrations that demonstrate the various positions and exercises that make it even easier to understand.  It was created both for novice and experienced practitioners alike, with its simplicity and the wealth of information it offers the reader.  Anyone interested in exploring the sacred nature of sexuality will find this book a useful and inspiring resource.

The book continues to delve deeper into the mysteries to describe the collective unconsciousness (Divine Consciousness) and the four main Palaeolithic and Neolithic Archetypes for Relationships, explaining how they relate directly with aspects of ourselves.  Many other topics include the seven energy centers (Chakras) and how to balance the energies and polarities within us, yoga exercises, massage, Kegel (or sex) exercises, breathing, meditation and visualization.   It candidly explains different aspects of sexuality and relationships like masturbation, prolonging arousal, breathing and orgasm, the energetics of sex, sexual ethics, oral and anal sex, tuning into your partner sexually, charging the energy centers, and the Sexuality Rituals such as Sacred Marriage and Sacred Prostitution.

Sex, Magic and Spirit is not only for those who practice Wicca, Yoga, Tantra or other Sacred Sexualities.  It is designed for those interested in experiencing greater intimacy, unity, balance, and metaphysical enlightenment with your partner and within yourself.

I personally found Sex, Magic and Spirit informative, well-written, enlightening and fascinating to read.  My partner and I enjoyed experimenting with the various techniques described in the book.  We both found the experience heightened our sensitivity to each others’ needs and brought greater awareness of our own.  I highly recommend this book for couples, individuals or pansexual groups who wish to delve deeper into their own sexual mysteries and awaken the God(dess) within.

Aghora Tantra Workshop with Mark Michaels and Patricia Johnson

“By that which one falls, by that shall one rise.” Aghora means “without fear.” In this workshop we will discuss some of the more extreme Tantric practices in which social and personal boundaries are consciously crossed for the purpose of spiritual evolution. Tantra recognizes that one pathway to opening up higher consciousness is through shocking the system. Practices such as piercing, meditation in cremation grounds, and imbibing of mind altering substances are traditionally practiced. Along with these traditional rituals, we will discuss ways in which the Aghoric approach can adapted and employed in modern, Western society. We will also discuss the often misunderstood fierce aspects of the deities Kali and Shiva.

Mark Michaels and Patricia Johnson are co-authors of The Essence of Tantric Sexuality (Llewellyn Worldwide). They have been teaching Tantra and Kriya yoga together since 1999 and have been featured in many publications, including The Village Voice, Now, Jane, Rockstar, Breathe and Redbook.

Back from Dark Odyssey

Oh, I’m so zonked. Lots of talking, playing (mostly talking) and bourbon, little sleep. It’ll be days before I recover from the past two weeks of travel to a play party and Spring Fire.

I spent most of my time preparing for my ‘How to be a Sex Blogger’ workshop and the sex bloggers panel. The blogger workshop was well received by those who attended. Someone (maybe Tatsumi?) said the attendance was very good, considering that most folks missed the afternoon workshops, cause they were sleeping off their Friday night spent in the Dungeon and Sex-o-Rama. I did 70 slides and a 36 page handout. I’m going to try and edit it together and put it up soon, perhaps in a PDF format. Thanks to Seraphin and Anton who got the projector working on Saturday. Those things are damm finicky!

Jefferson and Marcus’ presentations went well, especially the bisexuality discussion. I was the ringer, asking ‘so, when’s the bi orgy event?’ Because I was attending their workshops, I didn’t attend many others. I did attend Anita Wagner’s on resolving jealously in a poly relationship. Also Bridgett “Lee” Harrington’s ‘Rope Bondage for Lovemaking.’ I’m going to try and catch her ‘Speed Bondage‘ at TES this Saturday.

I hadn’t expected to enjoy it, but Selina’s Erotic Easter Egg hunt was a hoot.

Jefferson says I’m a “butch top” because I flogged a pain slut I know from summer camp. Is that bad?

Phillip brought me to a collaring ceremony. I had never seen one, and was moved by the solemnity of it and the gravity of the commitment the parties made to each other.

Many thanks to Steve B. who did my first rope suspension. It was really cool, except for the male onlooker who kept talking to us, and called me ‘girl.’ Bad scene etiquette, dude. I have some lovely ropemarks on my chest that I had to warn my facialist about today. And rope marks on my wrists. Eep. And Barbara Nitke has the photographs to prove it. When are we setting up your blog, dear?

Thanks to Wild Thing, who certainly knows how to throw a party.

It was great to see old friends from summer camp and meet new ones. I received the surprise of my life on Friday. I walked into Helen Boyd’s workshop on monogamy. A woman in the back row stands up and we look at each other. Both our jaws drop – I’m looking at my old friend ‘Rachel.’ Rachel and I have been friends since we worked together in the same office over 20 years ago. We don’t want to disrupt the workshop, so we go out into the hallway. We fall into each other’s arms, hug and laugh hysterically.

Holding an event of this kind made me really appreciate Dark Odyssey Summer Camp. When we checked out today, I said to Jefferson, ‘Where have all the perverts gone?’ The next one is scheduled for Sept. 12-17. I’m already thinking about what I could present – maybe “60 Websites in 60 minutes?”

We’re going to Spring Fire

Remember what clueless, trembling, newbies we were? Hell, at least I was. Now, we are going to be presenting at Dark Odyssey’s Spring Fire. How hilarious is that?

We’ll be doing a panel on sex blogging. I will be moderating. Wish me luck – moderating this group could be like herding cats. Between us, our blogs cover a diverse range of interests (as Jefferson dubbed us, the doyenne, the hippie, the whore and the slut) and raise a multitude of issues (creating characters, privacy, anonymity, propriety).

I’ll also be teaching a workshop called ‘Everything You Need to Know about Becoming a Sex Blogger (But Were Afraid to Ask).’ It’ll cover question such as:

  • Should I have a blog?
  • What is this ‘blogging’ thing?
  • How do I get on the internets?
  • Sure, I have a blog, but how do readers find me?
  • Should I write as myself, or under a pseudonym?

I’ll have a lot of tips and tools for setting up a blog, finding inspiration and writing well and building readership in this highly interactive medium. If you’re promoting a book or project, I have lots of idea about how to get the word out.

Jefferson and Marcus will be doing sessions on orgy organizing and etiquette (‘Naked in a Crowd’) and on male bisexuality (‘Odd Man In’). I plan on sitting at the back of the room and heckling them. ;-D
