Sketches from the archive of the legendary Tom of Finland will once again – it’s easily been ten or so years – hang on the walls of Feature Inc. Tom of Finland, the artist who took masculine to macho and big to XXX large, clocked the butch gay clone phenomenon at its onset and blew it out. His super hung studs, with more t&a than any cheesecaker could aspire to, are packed for action yet also deliver knowing glances and looks that are full of the camaraderie and humor that his vision of a utopian man to man culture was based on. This exhibition is made in cooperation with the Los Angeles based Tom of Finland Foundation.
Partnering Tom of Finland is and then some, sexual imagery by a number of other contemporary artists who frequently use sexual imagery in their work. The range is wide, tho less poser/genital display and more twist. Participating artists are: Richard Kern, Judy Linn, Bastille, Jerry Phillips, Martin of Holland, Joe Brainard, Fred Esher, Larry Clark, Robert W. Richards and Brian Kenny, Sean Landers, Richard Prince, Robert Fontanelli, GB Jones, Jeff Burton, Mie Yim, Raymond Pettibon, Catherine Opie, Carl Ferrero, Kevin Larmon, Jared Buckhiester, Judy Rifka, Jeffrey Pittu, Scooter Laforge, Tyler Ingolia, David Frye, The Hun, Kinke Kooi, Juan Gomez, Rex, Gengoroh Tagame.
Tom of Finland, Touko Laaksonen by birth, was born on the south coast of Finland on May 8, 1920. He trained and worked in design and advertising and in 1973, left his job to work full time on his drawings. Between 1978 and 1988, Tom of Finland split his time between Helsinki and Los Angeles; he died of an emphysema–induced stroke on November 7, 1991. This exhibition is made in cooperation with the Los Angeles based Tom of Finland Foundation.

Arizona LeatherSIR 2010, internationally renowned sexuality author and educator Lee Harrington is inviting you to explore our relationship to this often-said but rarely explored word: Sir. From growing up in the south to embracing the erotic tension, gender conformity to reclaiming power after pain, our relationships with this three letter word are complex.
This fundraiser project for CARAS (Community-Academic Consortium for Research in Alternative Sexualities), it is an attempt to explore our relationships to this word, whether in the Leather, BDSM and Kink worlds, or in our multi-faceted lives at large. Some ideas for topics may include:
- The tension between Sir as mundane term and Sir as a term of power
- First times using the word Sir in relationships or play (saying or hearing)
- The differences in saying Sir to different people
- Gender and the word Sir
- Class or Race dynamics and Sir
- Sir as an honorific or diminutive term
- Sir in the workplace or culture at large
- Finding a balance between identities
- History of the word Sir in culture
- … and more!
Authors are invited to write 2-10 pages (approximately 1000-5500 words). Non-fiction is preferred; fiction and poetry will be considered on a case by case basis.
Who Should Contribute:
We are looking for a variety of contributions- Masters/Mistresses and Slaves, Tops and Bottoms, Leather, Male, Female, Genderqueer, Straight, Queer, Monogamous, Polyamorous, Old and New Guard, Experienced and Fresh-eyed… and everyone else. English-language contributions preferred, but multi-lingual entries accepted on a case by case basis.
How To Contribute:
Send a one-paragraph summary of the concept of what you want to write about to Lee@PassionAndSoul.com with the subject line “Coming to Sir Anthology” before September 1st, 2010. Also include up to one paragraph about yourself as the author.
Why the summaries first? A book of only one type of entries would not show the diversity of experiences with the word Sir taking place in our community and behind closed doors.
Once summaries have been accepted, authors will have until October 7th to get their rough draft in. New authors will be worked with throughout the process to help share their unique story with the world.
Compensation:
Authors will have their biographies listed in the book, have wholesale rights to the project, and receive 1 finished copy of the book upon completion. All profit from “Coming to Sir” in 2010 and 2011 will benefit CARAS (see http://www.CARAS.ws), with checks cut to CARAS on a quarterly basis.
==========
In 2009, Lee Harrington’s Sacred Kink: The Eightfold Paths of BDSM and Beyond opened up the dialogue around altered states of consciousness, sexuality with intent, sex magic, and BDSM and its intersections with faith to an audience hungry for information. Now, it’s time to tell your stories.
Have you experienced catharsis, ordeals, transformation or a rite of passage in your erotic edge experiences? Do your perceive your consensual slavery as an ascetic path, find depth in your fear play, or dance in delight at the end of a lash? Do your fetish objects hold actual power? Does your connection to the divine manifest through your kink, engaging you through possession in or through scenes or as a sacred consort? Perhaps you have a different tale to tell?
Authors are invited to write 2-10 pages (approximately 1000-5500 words) about their own personal experiences with Sacred Kink. Anthology contributions need to be about a specific encounter or theme/concept within the life of the author, not on Sacred Kink in general. Fiction is not appropriate. Poetry will be considered on a case by case basis.

Are you ready to own your sexuality, to reclaim it, heal it and celebrate it?
Amy Jo Goddard is launching the Women’s Sexuality Empowerment Apprenticeship on September 21, 2010 in New York City. This program is a serious commitment to your sexual self. It’s a program that fills a gap for women who are seeking a unique environment where they can study themselves intimately. There is no way it won’t transform the women who choose it.
Join Amy Jo and some of the former participants of the program for a free introductory night. Amy Jo will help women to assess where they are in their own sexuality and lead them in a guided meditation and interactive discussion. As an attendee, you will be able to ask questions of her and of the former participants to see whether the program feels right for you. There is no obligation to take the program, and you will definitely walk away with some clarity about your own sexuality.
“I know there is a deep need for safe spaces where women can study and grow their sexuality, so I’ve carefully constructed a framework where women can learn experientially and share with each other aspects of their sexual selves that have been in hiding. I want to see women be truly empowered sexually. I want to see women support each other. I want women to have the intimate relationships they dream of. I want to support women to take the risks required to become their most authentic, fulfilled sexual selves.”

While the whole world was debating the American Academy of Pediatrics’s position on “female genital cutting” the AAP was against it before they were for it, and now, after an outcry, they’re against it again Alice Dreger and Ellen Feder have been raising the alarm about “medical research” currently being conducted at Cornell University. A pediatric urologist at Cornell Dix Poppas has been operating on little girls with what he judges to be oversized clitorises, cutting away important clitoral tissues, and then stitching the glans to what remains of the shaft. Poppas claims that, unlike past clitoral-reduction procedures, his procedure is “nerve sparing.”
…There’s lots to be outraged about here: there’s nothing wrong with these girls and their healthy, functional-if-larger-than-average clitorises; there’s no need to operate on these girls; and surgically altering a girl’s clitoris because it’s “too big” has been found to do lasting physical and psychological harm. But what’s most outrageous is how Poppas is “proving” that his surgery “spares nerves.”

Our Porn, Our Selves is a resource that aims to create an alternative and constructive conversation on the use of pornography by women, and in turn offer balance to the anti-porn feminist agenda. It was formed by Violet blue in response to the Stop Porn Culture conference. Violet Blue has now set up a Facebook page and website as resources. There’s also a Twitter hashtag: #proporn
Read more about the Stop Porn Culture organization.
One of the speakers is Prof. Donna M. Hughes, who slandered MayMay for his role as an organizer of KinkForAll, and conflates his role as an organizer with human trafficking.
You should also watch Violet’s video, in which she talks about women, anti-porn feminists and porn. She’s also running a contest – make a video that you are pro-porn.
Pro-Porn Principles:
WE who declare that organizations such as Feminists Against Pornography do not speak for us.
WE who want the world to know that organizations such as Feminists Against Pornography do not represent feminists as a group.
WE who believe that every woman has the right and power to enjoy her sexuality as she decides.
WE who believe that to tell a woman how she may or may not enjoy her sexuality in any way is to deny that woman of her rights over her sexuality.
WE who state that any woman who attempts to control the way another woman enjoys, explores or expresses her sexuality is in fact creating a world that is harmful for all women.
WE who state that we are women, and we like pornography.
WE who state that as women, we are not harmed or threatened by the creation or viewing of pornography, and we wholly support the rights of any gender to view, create and enjoy pornography without judgment.
WE who want a world in which pornography is simply a sex toy enjoyed by all genders and sexual orientations, where women and men view porn within their own self-defined healthy sexuality, without being considered sick, twisted, wrong or mentally ill, and that men who enjoy pornography are no more likely to beat their wives, rape women or become peadophiles than anyone else in society.
WE hereby declare ourselves as adult women capable of making our own choices about our bodies and enjoyment of explicit visual stimulation for our sexual health and well-being.
WE hereby demand that our voices be heard.

Two studies about the safety of lubricant use during anal intercourse were presented last week at the 2010 International Microbicides Conference in Pittsburgh. The data from the studies has yet to be published, but there have already been several write-ups about the research , which at first blush seem to suggest that using lubricant might be found to be associated with an increased risk of STDs. As Jim Pickett, the chair of the International Rectal Microbicide Advocates (IRMA) one of the organizations involved in putting on the conference, said to me in an email, what is key is that this research be discussed and interpreted without hyperbole. If you're confused by what you've read so far, you're not alone. Let's start with the research itself.
One was a laboratory study of six popular lubricants used during anal intercourse. Actually only five of them are popular for anal intercourse (Astroglide, Elbow Grease, ID Glide, KY Jelly and Wet Platinum), the sixth (Pre) was used because it is isotonic (more on that below). The popular lubricants were chosen based on a large global survey which asked over 9,000 people about lubricant use during anal sex. Researchers did not report on which specific style of each product was used in the research, but in one write up I read that the “basic formulation” was used from each brand. (Interesting side note from my years in sex shops: the lubricant Pre is a lubricant made specifically for women trying to conceive. In addition to being isotonic, it is the only lubricant on the market that is specifically designed not to harm sperm).
The overall purpose of the study was to see if lubricant might play a role in increasing risk of STD transmission during anal intercourse. To this end, the researchers wanted to understand what, if any, direct damage lubricants might have on rectal and cervical tissue. They also wanted to see how the lubricants might impact healthy bacteria that are present in the rectum. There are, of course, many ways to damage rectal tissue. In this study the researchers focused on one particular effect which can damage the tissue in the rectum essentially by drying up cells, causing them to die and slough off. This can happen if the lubricant being used has higher concentrations of salts and sugars than are found in the skin cells it comes in contact with. The lubricant can draw water out of the cells, resulting in damage that can increase risk of infection (the science minded among you can find more detailed explanations here, here, or here).
. . .
A second study looked at the use of lubricants during anal intercourse outside the laboratory. This study included 229 men who had reported having receptive anal intercourse in the past month, and 192 women who reported having receptive anal intercourse in the past year. Participants completed a computer assisted self-interview about sexual behavior. Among other things, participants were asked about use (or non-use) of lubricants and the particular brands they used during anal sex. From that group, 302 participants also had rectal tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea. Most of the participants reported using lubricant the last time they had receptive anal intercourse. Of the 302 participants, 25 tested positive for an anal STD. More than two-thirds of the people diagnosed with an STD reported using lube the last time they had receptive anal intercourse, compared with one third of people who had not used a lube. Read another way, people who reported using lubricants the last time they had anal sex were about twice as likely to have chlamydia or gonorrhea as those who did not use lubricants.
