Joseph Epstein reviews Karen Abbott’s new book, Sin in the Second City, about the Everleigh Club , one of the best known Chicago cathouses of the early 20th century:

The characters of Minna and Ada Everleigh and their thoughtful way of going about their business are intricately delineated by Ms. Abbott, who, I think it fair to say, views them affectionately and with measured admiration. But her book is ultimately a saga of a clash between the forces of vice and those of reform in the city of Chicago. In this battle, reform has right but absolutely no humor on its side — right, that is, if one assumes that human weakness is easily eradicated through the changing of institutions. (more. . .)

It’s on the reading pile – Cassandra gave this to me for my birthday.

120x240 fun Im going to Blogher

Their annual conference will be held in Chicago, July 27-29. More info about the conference and the program here.

I am going! I’m flying in Thursday afternoon.

I am organizing a private gathering for the sex bloggers. If you are going to Blogher, or are a Chicago area sex blogger, please email me. (My email’s in my Blogger profile).

It will probably be a dinner somewhere. Dinner Thursday night with a group is also on the agenda. Susan Mernit is going to organize an Open Space session (which will be held on Sunday) around sex and blogging. This is still in formation, so please email her with ideas.

If you know Chicago and the Navy Pier, and have suggestions for a good place to have dinner (preferably with a private room), please feel let me know about that too.
