Love and Marriage

Among the big headlines in Great Britain today is the right for civil ceremonies between same-sex couples. This places Old Blighty on the same footing with countries like Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Canada.
The United States, under the current guidance of that alcoholic, former coke-head, Texas National Guard deserter impersonating an elected president, will never embrace the compassion of either the Beatitudes or the most decent principals of basic civilization and allow consenting adults to live with dignity.
Instead, the rigidly fundamentalist Christian mainstay of America, fashioned entirely from the long-standing pagan religions of the Mediterranean world, will continue to display anything but love for the outsiders, the marginalized, the disenfranchized.
In America, it will always be the absolute truth of Jesus - the product of a sky god and an earthling, an unemployed carpenter who kept exclusive company with 12 other celibate males; nothing unhealthy about that lifestyle.
In America, there is only consideration for sanctified monogamous heterosexuality. Any dialogue to the contrary is steamrolled over by the lame-brain engorged rapture, with the fully orchestrated Hollywood-style production numbers; the serried ranks of Raybanned Secret Service Men; the ululating good ‘ole boys, the big-hair hoopla, the bra-popping, pompom waggling cheerleaders, the Spandex highkicks; the tossing ocean of flags; the relentlessly idiotic gospel songs, and the suckworthy con that The Bible - an entertaining anthology of literary genres - is the absolute truth revealed.
In America, as long as this atmosphere exists, and same-gender couples can not experience the same dignity and civil rights as opposite sex couples, then this lends credence to the dictum that a man must swallow a toad every morning to be sure of not meeting with anything more revolting in the day ahead.
Hey! There are a few of us over here in the States that embrace both Jesus and same sex unions. I’m one of them! We’re not ALL Right-Wing Christian Fundamentalist, Holier Than Thou, Fuck Wads. Some of actually use common sense! Shocking, I know! Besides, isn’t one of the most important commandments that we love one another. I don’t see anything in that statement that says only a man and a woman can love one another. Love is love and love is NOT gender specific.
I know the five major world religions are not all dominated by harebrained zealots. Yet in America, we can’t seem to escape the Puritan legacy.
Love and compassion often seem in short supply for brief lifespans.
