Go to The Frisky to see the trailer (my site is too racy for Hulu, so it’s blocked).

spread 300x135 Spread Review, Sundance 2009 (SpoutBlog)
The advantage of seeing the Ashton Kutcher-starring Spread at Sundance, as opposed to in theaters down the road, isn’t just the fact that director David Mackenzie hasn’t yet been forced to neuter the film’s skintastic sex scenes his 2003 Young Adam was shaved down for far less to get an R rating here in the States, but also the way it so nicely compliments a film that screened a few days later, Steven Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience. Neither movie quite works on its own, but as a pair, they are the yin to one another’s yang — portraits of a Hollywood hustler and high-class escort that, taken together, give a well-rounded picture of that world.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW: “The Girlfriend Experience”

A period piece set in late 2008, Steven Soderbergh’s “The Girlfriend Experience” sets a clever relationship drama amid recession-era woes. Starring porn actress Sasha Grey as Christine, a self-described “sophisticated escort” in New York City, the movie broadens the minimalist approach that the director first applied in “Bubble.” Soderberg creates an eerie atmosphere by esoterically cutting between Christine’s various clients and her unique relationship with her fast-talking metropolitan boyfriend.

A hustler for hard times, Christine puts on a tough facade when questioned about the validity of her profession by a local journalist (Marc Jacobson, who wrote a real magazine piece about escorts), but her fragility eventually starts bubbling to the surface.

Soderberg’s off-center technique, which involves excessively long takes, unusual framing stategies and the gorgeous photography supplied by his beloved RED camera, suits the need for the movie to work as a nuanced character study. Christine’s doomed power drive echoes the motives of Wall Street and other contemporary forms of avariciousness – which turns her intellectual dysfunction into a parable for modern times. “I should probably see a shrink,” one client tells her, “but it seems like more fun to see you.” As a dumping ground for American hedonism, Christine symbolizes the frailty of the last eight years, and leaves the future wide open. In other words, it’s the ideal inauguration day treat. [Eric Kohn]

I saw this on the Chemistry list and have permission from the casting director to repost this notice. Here’s a post from Cinematical with a little more background.

========

Steven Soderbergh is directing an independent film that will explore expanded ideas of intimacy and relationships and is looking for non-actors to interview to play fictional characters. The drama is set in the world of high-end prostitution. We do not need people who have experience with escorts, but rather people who have a broader sense of a discussion about modern relationships. The roles include, among other things, a client out for a fancy dinner on the town; a heterosexual couple that engages her in a threesome (nudity required); and a man who she ultimately falls in love with outside of her profession. Other roles will include women who share the same occupation as the lead character. Ages range from 28-50.

As the film will be improvised from a detailed outline of the fictional story, there is only an interview to be done in person with the Casting Director Carmen Cuba, and nothing to prepare. She will be in town beginning September 8th and hoping to meet people starting that week. If you are interested in being interviewed, please send a photo and a brief introduction of yourself to gfecastingATgmailDOTcom. Please include your occupation and any of your outside interests.
