WHAT did gay liberation do for gay cinema? To begin to tackle this question, one has to survey the shadowy history of on-screen homosexuality, consider the elusive notion of a gay sensibility and — as with all minority-group debates — weigh the conflicting ideological positions on difference and assimilation. But while there may be no easy answer, the coincidental appearance this week of two gay-theme events in New York repertory houses provides a window into the evolution of gay cinema, both in the shadow of liberation politics and far beyond it.

“Word Is Out,” a 1977 documentary that is being revived in a restored print at Anthology Film Archives starting Friday, interweaves the stories of 26 gay men and lesbians who speak openly about coming out, finding love and fighting prejudice. It was a milestone in the developing public image of the gay-rights movement.

When “Word Is Out” was released in theaters and broadcast on public television more than eight years after the Stonewall riots, media depictions were still largely confined to unflattering stereotypes, and gay audiences had yet to see their experiences reflected on screen. Reviewing the film in The Advocate, Vito Russo declared, “The silence of gay people on the screen has been broken.”

But gay (and gay-friendly) filmmakers were never exactly mute, nor have they all opted to speak in the same ways. Queer/Art/Film, a monthly series that begins its new season at the IFC Center on Monday, serves as a reminder that there is a strain of gay cinema that predates and runs parallel to the consciousness-raising tradition pioneered by “Word Is Out.” Organized by the filmmaker Ira Sachs (“Forty Shades of Blue”) and the journalist Adam Baran, the series is programmed by gay artists and writers invited to present a film they find personally significant.

Nostalgia (2009) is a super-cool porno by up-and-cumming director, Courtney Trouble.  As the tile indicates, it has a nostalgic feel and pays homage to the late great Marilyn Chambers who sadly died of an aneurysm in April last year.  Marilyn Chambers was best known for her portrayal in Behind the Green Door (1972) in which her character Gloria gets kidnapped and “raped” before a live sleazy circus-like audience.

Scene 1- (Homage to Behind the Green Door) All girl three-way starring Jiz Lee

Two women are making out on a couch, one in a feather mask who is “warming” the other girl up (Gloria) to get her ready for the circus-rape orgy scene.  Killer tunes play in the background.  “Gloria” is then lead blindfolded into a dungeon scene where several spectators await including Carol Queen with a crazy voyeuristic smile on her face. “Gloria” is then “ravished” upon a stage by one the feathered girl, when in walks Jiz Lee, likewise feather-masked sporting a big strap-on.  The audience claps as both feather-masked women play with her, while Jiz mounts her, first slowly, then hard and fast.  She orgasms? Then both masked ladies squirt fem ejaculate over her.  This scene doesn’t have the impact that my memory has of the original film, but then I was probably pretty impressionable back then, and I can remember it being pretty “Wow!”  What may have lacked during this scene for me was the “rape” element.  In this film the scene is very “consensual” and doesn’t have the scary rape-fantasy scenario that many women fantasize about.  And, while I don’t agree with nonconsensual sex in real life, in fantasy having rough sex and being taken is hot.  Also, I remember the audience being more involved in the original than they are here. It was way more like a circus freak show, and being a freak, I loved the edgy atmosphere of the Behind the Green Door much better.  Of course, this is Courtney’s own take on it, but it just didn’t work for me as well as the original.

Interlude- Courtney & Pepper

Meanwhile, to begin the film and in between each episode, Courtney and real-life lover Pepper are making out as they watch the films via a computer screen. These are just short interludes until the end of the film.

I never saw Babylon Pink, so can’t refer to it for comparison.  But, this scene was really kind of boring and didn’t seem to have much focus or built-up progression.  It features Tina Horn (who was awesome in Seven Minutes in Heaven).  Here, you can barely hear them over the music, and I never get into it.  The scenario is three gals sitting down to lunch in this weird room that looks like an empty stage.  One is a vegan and is uninterested in the other two women’s discussion about meat.  Turned off I guess is more appropriate.  So she fantasizes about having sex, first as the bottom, then turning the tables and topping the other two.  Like I said, press FF and skip it.

Scene 4- (Homage to the Devil in Miss Jones) with April Flores, Kimberly Kane, Courtney Trouble and Pepper

I didn’t see the original Devil in Miss Jones, but saw 3 & 4 with Amber Lynn and Vanessa Del Rio which was uber hot.  This scene stars April Flores as a lonely woman who commits suicide and then finds herself in purgatory.  I really love the beginning atmosphere of the scene as April stares at herself in the mirror and then runs the bathtub where she will slit her wrist (which is hinted at with red glitter running down the side of the tub and her floating in the bathtub full of blood).  It could have been more alt, edgy horror-show, but was very artistic and April is fantastic.  So, she is transported to purgatory (which is a lot like hell) and the scene becomes more comical.  Kimberly Kane (the Devil’s assistant) meets her at the door to hell and tells her she has a chance to go back if she engages in one of the deadly sins, which she of course picks lust.  Kane then brings April into a room where Courtney and Pepper are making out.  A fuck-fest ensues, but mainly the couples stay together until the end.  Kane and April are seriously hot and I wish the scene wasn’t as cut up as it was, and focused longer on them.  Not that I didn’t get into Courtney and Pepper, I just wanted more of Kane and April.  By the end they are all having sex together in a massive orgy and assume a very cool position with April and Courtney are facing each other as they boink tits and their partners lay under them eating them out.  Great scene!  But give me more April & Kimberly!

The END credits are dedicated to Marilyn Chambers and then there is an inserted vignette that goes back to Dr. Sid talking into a recorder about his last patient Madison, as Jiz fucks her from behind.  Dr. Sid talks about discovering a pleasure spot in her throat and calls it the Blakovich spot.  Again, pretty funny and unexpected.  It left me smiling and wanting more, more, more!

This film also has killer glitter-trash tunes featuring The Need, Veronica Lipgloss, TWIN, and Two Ton Boa, and was nominated for an AVN for the music.

Overall, Nostalgia was very good despite the third scene which didn’t cut it and the first which could have been much more edgy.  A great attempt at honoring these classics, which are big shoes to fit into.  I really love that Courtney Trouble is trying to do something radically different with porn and take it into a new, or even retro direction.

Scene 2- Satine and Derrick

Whoa!  This scene is perhaps the best in the film.  So fucking hot, it sizzles and the chemistry between Satine and Derrick is tangible. Not to mention that Derrick is to die for (bald, alt and tattooed, with a rock-hard body) and Satine is a sultry little minx. Satine’s fantasy is getting stranded on a lost desert road, where she meets a “kindly stranger” who offers to stay with her until someone comes for her vehicle.  The sun is hot, the sand is dusty, they are sweating and flirting, and then things turn a bit dangerous.  Derrick realizes no-one is coming for a while and he can have his way with her.  There is a lot of foreplay which becomes increasingly rougher as he realizes, hey, she likes it.  He starts pushing her around, groping her roughly, pulling her hair and smacking her face and tits and you can tell that Satine is getting so turned on and juicy before he ever starts fucking her.  I can’t tell you how many times I watched this scene and came.  Definitely jilling off material! Scene 3 – Francesca and Christian

Scene 4 – Marie and Julius

Man, give me ten minutes with her and I’ll have her crying and begging for more.  Again, like the first scene there was no build-up, no sizzle, and it didn’t seem very rough to me, but maybe my finger pressed the fast forward button by mistake and I missed all the good stuff.  Nope. Don’t think so.  Weak scene, but too bad as it had potential.

Scene 5 – Sasha and Daniel

Tristan Taormino’s Rough Sex is overall a great porn if you like rough sex and some serious role-playing power exchange fantasies.  It is worth it just for scene 2 and 5 alone.  I applaud Tristan for giving the women in the film the chance to design their own scenarios and define what is rough and sexy to them.  The production quality is pretty good in most places although the sound was off a bit sometimes and some of the camera work looked a bit shaky.  The extras includes a Choking and Safety snippet with Penny Flame who teaches the proper way to choke to avoid injury which I thought was a very good idea, as no doubt a bunch of novices will see this film and want to start practicing without a clue.

The 8^th Day is the newest “blockbuster” adult film by Adam & Eve.  It is epic, and by that I mean long.  It has two disks for the film itself with over 4 hours of “action” and 9 hours of DVD extras on two other disks.  It has also been getting some great reviews including the coveted XCritic Pick and is currently the “#1 Adult Movie in America”.

This is a porn with plot film.  If you are more of a gonzo guy or girl, you won’t like this film.  However, if your favorite films are Pirates or Fashionsitas, you may get into it.  I happen to love Pirates and Fashionistas, but had a different reaction to this film.

Plot

Modeled after the post-apocalyptic dystopian actions films of the 70s like Mad Max and Tank Girl, The 8^th Day features Kayden Kross, a Barbie-doll blonde with fake tits in the lead role of Samantha who awakens from a cryogenic slumber to find the world has been destroyed by technology and is now a nomad’s wasteland with warring tribes of survivors.  Turns out it was her father—a scientist and the guy who put her into suspended animation—that is responsible for destroying the world.  So Sam goes out into the now near deserted LA and wanders around for a long, long, time, occasionally finding deformed humans to have sex with or run away from.

She is then kidnapped, but quickly rescued by scavenger Mel (Amber Rayne) and taken to a desert oasis called Elysium Fields where the inhabitants down technology and follow enigmatic leader, Prince Amir.  However, once Amir–whose real name is Dave–finds out it was her father who destroyed the earth, Sam is strapped to a cross and sacrificed to die in the desert.  The end.

Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?!  While the premise of this film is cool, and the setting, costuming and special-effects make-up stand-out including the awesome tribal tattoos that most of the adult performers sport, the film is slow, long, and the sex scenes mediocre to bad.

Sex

Rather than bore you with a scene-by-scene breakdown, I’ll talk about the one scene that really shines starring Amber Rayne with Cheyne Collins and Sledge Hammer.  Amber Rayne who was awarded the 2009 AVN Unsung Starlet of the Year award, is amazing.  Not only is she a believable actress which is hard to find in the adult industry, she has lots of other talents.  She really takes on these two guys who are supposed to “cleanse her” of bad technology from her wanderings in the city.  She is the most enthusiastic and skilled cocksucker I’ve ever seen on screen.  And, while I’m not usually into cock-sucking scenes, she had me riveted.  She chokes and gobbles down two cocks back and forth with an animated “Ha!” each time she goes back down and stuffs these huge cocks down her throat like they were putty.  She also is amazing at anal (something she is known for) and DP as well, and these guys can’t get enough of her.  They are crazed as she orders them to give her their cocks and she drives them wild.

The other scenes are far less fantastic, featuring mutant-sex between Kayden Kross, Tommy Gunn and Aaron Wilcoxxx; a phony domination scene featuring Kylie Ireland and Derrick Pierce as sex slave Jandi Lin watches on; an incredibly annoying girl-girl scene with Bree Olson, Poppy Morgan and Tori Black who howl like sex-starved cats gone mad the entire scene; and a fall from paradise inspired scene with Darryl Hanah as Eve (who looks identical to the real Darryl Hannah),Violet Marcell as the snake and Evan Stone as Adam.  There is also an orgy feast featuring many of the above and a final scene with Kayden, Violet and Evan, none of which are worth mentioning.

I didn’t bother watching the extras, because it took four hours of monotonous “action” to watch the feature, and I only have so much time I can spend on a review of a product that in the end, bored the hell out of me.  This is of course my opinion, and you may enjoy the film like so many other reviewers did.  It is definitely worth it to see Amber Rayne’s scene and I suspect she will win another AVN award for this one.

Bend Over Boyfriend (1998)

Bend Over Boyfriend came out in 1998 and was the first and only instructional video of its kind to introduce anal pleasure for men, through strap-on sex with a female partner.  Although today the film seems a bit dated, compared to newer films of the same topic, like Tristan Taormino’s “Expert Guides”, at the time of its launch the film was groundbreaking and has remained one of the best-selling videos on this topic of all time.

While I have read some praise for the film, I have also read some criticism including that it is “too instructional”, “not erotic”, and that it has an “infomercial quality and the officious attention to every detail”.  This makes me wonder what people think an instructional film is.  I mean really.  I don’t expect instructional films about sex to be erotic, or to lack instruction.  I want them to teach me something in the simplest way possible.  I want the people presenting the topic—in this case Dr. Carol Queen and Robert Morgan—to be enthusiastic, knowledgeable and experienced, and to provide details, even if they are not always relevant to me.  I don’t necessarily want to be entertained or aroused by the content, or expect it to get an Academy Award.  I want to learn something new.  If I wanted to just watch people fuck, I’d rent a porno.

Now, I’ll admit that academics are often a bit dry.  After all, Carol Queen is not an actor, but an educator, although she does know and present her topic better than any actor could.  And, while she does recommend products at the end of the film and where to buy them (read: resources), I think it is certainly useful if the general public doesn’t have a clue about anal dildos or strap-ons, which was certainly the case back in 1998.  And, let’s remember that sex shops were not always as sex-positive or as helpful with knowledgeable staff as they are today.

I think Bend Over Boyfriend is a great film and it is easy to see why it has had such longevity.  Carol and Robert are passionate about their topic and very experienced.  They talk about anatomy, prostate pleasure and health, relaxation and massage, safe sex, arousal, gender-bending, and the best tools for anal stimulation (including mouth, tongue and fingers!).  After this ten minute intro, they show you enthusiastically how it is done (and while this is probably not erotic for the viewer, I bet it was for them).  The film also includes two other male/female couples that demonstrate different scenarios, variations of anal pleasure and sexual positions.  So Bend Over Boyfriend was an excellent guide when it first came out, and today I believe it still has information that is valuable to share, especially for couples seeking to explore anal sex for men and gender-bending for the first time.

Misty debuts as a fantastic pervert at a party orgy, where Dr. Love humiliates her in public by taking credit for her newly acquired skills.  Misty gets fed up with Love and splits, but then returns to surprise suck/fuck him as one of his maids.  Meanwhile, Love can’t forget about Misty and is perhaps wishing he had treated her better?  The end of the film shows Misty transformed into the “teacher” and Dr. Love as her slave in chains of bondage in an “ironic” twist.

If you are into retro porn, The Opening of Misty Beethoven is a classic, more so for its “porn with plot” than titillating sex scenes, though.

I love reviewing porn for Babeland, because they always have the most interesting, unique and sexy films. This week’s review is Sugar High Glitter City, by Sir Video.

Sugar High Glitter City is set in a retro-dystopia where sugar and candy is outlawed and addicted candy ‘hos have to sell their bodies to feed their sweet obsession.  Of course, the cops are just as bad as the prostitutes and pimps, keeping the girls in supply for special tricks and treats.

The film features all dyke hardcore porn with an array of sweet candy-colored glitter dildos, saccharine pussy eating, and finger-licking good fisting sex.  The mise-en-scene is retro reminiscent of 70s sexploitation films with glitter make-up and strange spandex costuming, a Puss Puss Glitter Palace whorehouse, mean graffiti streets, and disco balls.

The sex is authentic dyke porn, but I had a hard time getting into some of it because of the poor lighting in several scenes.  But, you do get a lot of different scenes, various body types and genders including lipstick lesbians, dykes and gender-bending bois.  This film had great potential, but fell short of my expectations, mainly because the camera and lighting was rather shoddy.

Like Comstock’s other films, “Ashley and Kisha” showcases an intimate relationship between two lovers, whose story is tender and unique.  Ashley and Kisha are two young women who met in college and became lovers.  Ashley is an out-and-proud lesbian, while Kisha considered herself “straight” and not interested in women, until she met Ashley.  During their interview, the women talk about how Kisha initially rebuffed Ashley’s “animal instinct” advances until she tried more “subtler” methods, “easing her way in” to Kisha’s consciousness until Kisha could no longer resist.

The two are a study in contrasts:  Kisha is very conservative, soft and voluptuous; Ashley out-spoken, confident and rebellious with a lean, athletic body.   Ashley takes control in the bedroom, awakening Kisha’s body to a rediscovery of pleasure, a pleasure that only another woman can know.  Both women admit that sex together is the best they ever had.

Their story is sweet and amorous, their lovemaking playful, sensual and erotic.  “Ashley and Kisha” is delightful film about the rhapsody of young love between two women and their journey of new sexual discovery.

TV parodies are the big thing these days in porn, with big companies producing retro porn TV show spoofs from the 70s and 80s like Happy Days, The Partridge Family, The Brady Bunch, Three’s Company, and Bewitched.  And, why not?  These porn spoofs are all the rage, because making fun of 70s and 80s pop culture is very amusing.

And, while I like all of the above, I must admit I am a die-hart Trekkie.  Ya, I love Captain Kirk and Spock (cool ears, I wonder what his cock looks like?) and all the groovy outfits and girls with big hair.  I’m not so weird like my brother and go to cons dressed up in character, although I admit I have been tempted.  But, I don’t think your measure of fan-hood needs to include dressing up in silly costumes in public.  I prefer to be a private cult devotee and masturbate to my fantasies.  In fact, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve masturbated to the idea of being gang-banged by the guys in Nex Gen…  But, that’s another story, and hopefully another porn spoof in the making.

In “This Aint Star Trek XXX” the crew has a mission “to boldly go where no cock has gone before.”  Sweet!  You can see right away how Star Trek was made to become a porn.  Unfortunately, they don’t seem to use all those nifty one-liners enough.  For instance, I’m sure something could have been done with “Bone’s boner” or “Spock’s cock”, but these and other opportunities never emerge.  Evan Stone hams it up quite a bit behind-the-scenes and if the director had of been paying attention, he should have added some of Stone’s adlibbed lines to the script.  Stone is the perfect Captain Kirk, to be sure and he even got his lovely locks shorn for the part, but I feel the direction was very “stiff” (and not in a good way) which held Stone and the other cast members back a lot.  The director, Axel Braun, seemed more concerned with getting the atmosphere and production quality right (which he does amazingly well) rather than the comedic aspects that could and should have been emphasized.  In all fairness, he didn’t write the script, and it is hard to write comedy.  Maybe they should have let Evan Stone write it?

And, while “This Aint Star Trek” was a let down in that way, it excelled in every other department.  The cast is stellar and the sex rocks.  Stone is amazing as Kirk and has Shatner’s abrupt stuttering swagger down.  I really hope Shatner gets a chance to check out his performance.  Tony DeSergio is a pretty good Spock, even with his British accent.  Jenna Haze is the perfect cock-devouring alien love slave, and Sasha Grey makes for a sexy Vulcan undergoing “pon farr”, the Vulcan equivalent of unrepressed sexual passion.  Jada Fire is the hottest Uhura in her three-way with Stone and DeSergio, perhaps the best scene in the film (or a close runner up with Sasha Grey and Stone’s scene).  Nick Manning plays Khan and over-acts quite a bit, but it was somewhat appropriate to the role, I guess.

This 2 set DVD also has “a blooper reel” and “behind-the-scenes” as well as three bonus scenes from other films featuring Sasha Grey, Jenna Haze and Aurora Snow.

Overall, I enjoyed “This Aint Star Trek” quite a bit and look forward to watching some of the other spoofs, like “Not The Bradys XXX” (review coming soon).  Although I was hoping for more comedy and silly dialogue, the sex was great, and I guess that is all you can ask for in mainstream porn these days.

This scene is totally fucked.  It features Alec Knight doing a POV shoot with Andy in a creepy warehouse, as if she is auditioning for the lead role of “Dirty Filthy Trailer Trash Whores”.  Andy seems to be really high on Ecstasy or something and blabs non-stop which gets really weird as she takes dirty porn talk to a whole new level.  The camera-work is awesome and the edits cut from Alec’s POVs to McKai’s scene shots, making it feel very voyeuristic and gritty.  Despite Andy’s non-stop chatter, she is very sexy in this scene as she crawls around on the floor-on her dirty knees, of course.  She is a nasty little cock-sucking nymphet and plays it up well for the camera.  If you are into POV porn, you will probably like this scene a lot.

“On My Dirty Knees” is McKai’s best work by far.  I love the docu-porn, edgy style he uses that makes you feel like you are sneaking into a sleazy old stag-house to watch bad B-porn fuck flicks.  Andy San Dimas rocks as a wanna-be porn star who is fucking her way to the top of the alt-porn genre.  I look forward to more like this from both of them.
