A few weeks ago, I noticed some Tweets of MayMay’s regarding personal attacks, and was shocked to read  that he had been singled out because of his leadership in KinkForAll and called a child molester and pedophile.

A group called “Citizens Against Trafficking” (which Maymay has been referring to “Citizens Against Sexuality Freedom and Discussion” (CASFD)),  and which is co-founded by a University of Rhode Island professor named Donna M. Hughes and one of her students, Melanie Shapiro, issued a bulletin authored co-authored by Donna M. Hughes and Margaret Brooks (a professor of economics at Bridgewater State College, nee Margaret Landman) portraying KinkForAll as an event ‘for kinky sex and sadomasochists.’”

This couldn’t be further than from the truth.

Let’s remember that Donna M. Hughes is the same person who lobbied mightily in favor of the law that criminalized indoor prostitution in Rhode Island, and ridiculed sex workers when they testified against the legislation.  She also took an anti-education stance, opposing Megan Andelloux’s opening of the Center for Sexual Pleasure and Health.

Both MayMay and Sara Eileen, who came up with the concept of KFA, became adults at a time where information about sex and sexuality was much more freely available through the internet. I’m trying to remember my sources of sexual information, and it wasn’t my mother, a Western trained OB-GYN (see the irony?), who had enormous difficulty overcoming cultural conditioning and discussing sex with me.

KinkForAll’s core concept is of a serendipitous, ad-hoc unconference about the “intersection of sexuality with the rest of life.” It is most emphatically NOT  an event that includes any kind of sex or play. I have personally participated in two KinkForAll events in New York City. These are fast paced events, and the goal is to share, DISCUSS and TALK about aspects of sex and sexuality. I remember the tremendous energy and enthusiasm that came out of the first event. A number of individuals have taken it upon themselves to organize events around the country, including DC, San Francisco and Providence. Yes, there is taping, blogger and participants may Twitter, but this is explained in the rules for KinkForall:

KinkForAll will be talked about, blogged, recorded, photographed and logged in order to create, share, and distribute a repository of knowledge and experience. Participants always have the option to opt outof being photographed or otherwise recorded.

Because of MayMay’s openness about his sexuality, it’s easy for him to be singled out as the poster boy. It also minimize the involvement of Aida Manduley, the university student who should be applauded and given credit for her role as the principal organizer of KinkForAll Providence, held at Brown University. See Aida’s post where she clarifies many of the issues raised in the flyer. She also talks about how Margaret Brooks repeatedly emailed Brown Univ. officials, but never talked directly to her about the event,

It’s pretty terrifying to be the subject of an attack on the Internet. You can read MayMay’s account of what has happened thus far. And it’s pretty easy to “take out-of-context statements and blend them with factual inaccuracies to produce a piece of writing capable of creating (or sustaining) irrational moral panic on the part of those who read it.”

Professors Donna M. Hughes and Maragaret Brooks are mixing up human trafficking with the exchange of sexuality and intimacy between adults. It’s as if they don’t really understand what a pedophile really is.

MayMay is trying to find common points of interest with them, and addresses their concerns  in another post, and invites their dialog on how KFA could be made safer for all participants, including young people. Will they engage and actually participate in a dialogue? Not at all likely.  Donna M. Hughes is someone who is horrified by tattooed women. Professors Donna M. Hughes and Margaret Brooks are engaged in scare tactics, not civil discourse.

This has been a rather long and rambling post for me. Other people have articulated these issues much more clearly than me. The bottom line? Stand up, and speak out. Support MayMay. Support the KinkForAll concept, perhaps by attending and/or supporting a KinkForAll event. You’ll have to excuse me now, I’m helping plan a third KinkForAll in New York.

KFA KinkForAll New York City 2: What to expect

Only two more days to KinkForAll New York City 2!

*You should expect: *

–A prompt start. The event opens at 11:00am. We’ll have half an hour of set-up, and begin speaking at 11:30 sharp.

–A casual atmosphere. Dress comfortably, wear shoes you can move easily in. We have rooms across three floors. Every room is elevator accessible.

–Collaboration and spontaneity. If you get the urge to lead a discussion or have an idea you want to present, put it on the schedule grid and wing it.

–No nudity, no play. Our venue prohibits nudity and this event is not an appropriate play space.

–Personal autonomy. You’re welcome to come and go from the event as you please. If you get into a great conversation with someone new, you can always step ’round the corner for a coffee and join in again later on.

–Flexible presentation scheduling, but with a strict time frame. The schedule grid will allow presentations to be easily moved and shuffled as necessary. We will start and end each presentation on time.

–A very fast pace. Presentations are 20 minutes each. There is NO DOWN TIME between presentations. Read on to learn more about this.

–Cameras, computers, and audio and video recording equipment. KinkForAll *encourages* documentation of its events. If you do not wish to be photographed, we will have brightly colored nametags available for you to
wear to indicate this.

–A strong support staff. I and other volunteers will be keeping things on schedule and managing issues as they arise. If you cannot manage something yourself, you are welcome to turn to us.

Specifically, I will be acting as a point of contact with the Center, and being a mediator for any issues you may have. Maja is also an appropriate contact person to work the the Center, so bring any venue concerns to me, or
to her.

*You should bring: *

–Energy and your lovely selves.

–Kink/queer/sexuality-related material you’d like to swap, trade, give away, or showcase. Have some old books you don’t want any more? Bring them! Please remember this is NOT about selling stuff. Kink For All is not a commercial event.

–Anything you think might help us be a better event. Food, water, equipment. Anything you like. (See the Needs List). Set things up yourself if you can. If you need help, ask the person next to you!

Read more on what to expect here: http://kinkforall.pbwiki.com/WhatToExpect

*More on 20 minute presentations*

As I said, presentation slots at Kink For All are 20 minutes long, and there is no down time between presentations. We’re running at least 5 presentation spaces simultaneously with 3 slots each per hour. In the event that we do not  have 5 presentations running concurrently, the extra space will revert to social space for that 20 minutes.

If you’re planning to present, remember that your 20 minutes includes setting up, introduction, presentation, questions, and wrapping up. A volunteer will announce the transition of each session. If one presentation runs into the time slot of another, it will be cut short to keep us running on time.

If you’re asking yourself how you can fit a typical presentation into 20 minutes, the answer is, you can’t.

We’re asking you to break the form you may be used to, and try a very different approach. Get to the heart of the issue you’d like to address, and cut out everything extraneous. This short form makes it difficult to do things like teach new skills from beginning to end. The form is ideal, however, for pointing out and expounding upon one key idea. Rather than rush through several different points, focus.

If 20 minutes seems impossibly short to you, remember that radical ideas can be powerfully expressed in simple, straightforward language. And please, read more about this on our FAQ page.

Best,
Sara Eileen

Kinkforall 2009

by Viviane on 03/12/2009

in kinkforall,sex

The inaugural Kinkforall was a smashing success!

I remember reading the Tweet worrying whether we’d get 40 attendees.  Turns out 100 people turned out for 45 presentations. Tremendous energy, lots of different conversations, lots of folks from different organizations and lots of new folks. I know there was was poo-pooing about this event and I was proud to have helped sponsor it.

Now there are other Kinkforalls being organized.  See the gallery below for my pics from the event. Kudo to MayMay, Sara Eileen, the timekeepers (who kept us on track) and all the volunteers who came out and made the event happen. I’m looking foward to the next ones.

The next opportunity for us sex nerds to geek out will be Sex 2.0 on May 9, 2009. Will you be there?
