The CineKink Select, a special award for “artistic innovation,” was presented to “Schwarzwald” (Richard Kimmel), which was the highlight of the event’s kick-off gala at the start of the festival.

And the CineKink Tribute, recognizing extraordinary depiction of kink and sex-positivity in mainstream film and television, was given to the film “Shortbus” (ThinkFilm/John Cameron Mitchell, 2006) for its “frank, funny and human look at the inextricable role sexuality plays in our day-to-day lives and the many flavors it can exhibit.”

Honorable mentions for the CineKink Tribute went to the movie “Lust,Caution” (Focus Features), the documentary release “Zoo” (ThinkFilm) and to the syndicated series, “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” for its episode titled ’237 Reasons to Have Sex.’

Making its fifth annual run February 26-March 2, 2008, CineKink NYC featured a specially selected program of films and videos that celebrate and explore a wide diversity of sexuality. Billing itself as “the really alternative film festival,” the event was dedicated to the recognition and encouragement of sex-positive and kink-friendly depictions in film and television. With offerings drawn from both Hollywood and beyond, works presented at CineKink NYC ranged from documentary to drama, camp comedy to hot pornography – and everything in between.

Selections from CineKink NYC will be featured in a traveling version of the festival, slated to appear in various cities throughout the coming year.

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS LISTED

“CineKink Choice” – AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARDS
CineKink Choice awards, which go to feature-length works in competition during the festival, were determined by audience balloting at the close of each eligible work’s screening. The 2008 award winners are:

CineKink Choice Award for Best Documentary Feature:
“Call Me Troy” (Scott Bloom, 2007, USA, 100 minutes.) Profiling the life and times of one of the gay community’s most visible and tenacious advocates for change, Rev. Troy Perry, CALL ME TROY is an inspirational story about an individual whose activism was decades ahead of its time. Perhaps best known as the founder of the Metropolitan Community Church – the first church to recognize the spiritual needs of the gay community – Perry has also been an unwavering proponent for the God-given right to embrace and explore personal sexuality.

CineKink Choice Award for Best Narrative Feature:
“Viva” (Anna Biller, 2006, USA, 120 minutes) The sordid tale of a bored housewife who gets swept up in the sexual revolution, VIVA is a highly stylized film that draws on classic exploitation cinema for its look, characters and story-line. Saturated to the hilt with vibrant color and exquisitely detailed in its depiction of the period and the genre, it follows the adventures of Barbi who, abandoned by her perfect Ken-doll husband, quickly learns a lot more than she ever thought she wanted to know about the wild 1970s.

CineKink Choice Award for Best Experimental Feature:
“Silken Sleeves” (Maria Beatty, 2006, USA, 50 minutes) In a journey through four seasons of domination and submission, Midori, by turns playful and cruel, captures and binds the delicate Mayan, whose struggles avail her nothing in the presence of such rope-wielding expertise.

CineKink Choice Award – Honorable Mention:
“Triple X Selects: The Best of Lezsploitation” (by Michelle Johnson (aka DJ Triple X), 2007, USA, 48 minutes) An international feast of lezsploitation from the 1960s and ’70s in all of its notoriously twisted glory.

“CineKink Best” – JURY AWARD FOR BEST SHORTS
CineKink Best awards, which go to short works in competition during the festival, were determined by jury deliberation and ranking. The 2008 award winners are:

CineKink Best Narrative Short:
“Who’s the Top?” (Jennie Livingston, 2005, USA, 22 minutes)
In this fantastical S/M musical comedy, one writer finds her true self by determining who’s the bottom.

CineKink Best Documentary Short:
“Crossing” (HP Cumings, 2007, USA, 19 minutes)

CineKink Best Animated Short:
“Teat Beat of Sex” (Signe Baumane, 2007, USA, 4 minutes)
Three short lectures on sex given by a knowing woman.

CineKink Best Experimental Short:
“Closer” (Aitor Echeverria, 2007, Spain, 7 minutes)
The most everyday gestures become an extraordinary dance.

-tie-

“Salt” (Campbell Farquhar, 2006, New Zealand, 3 minutes)
Three people share a passion for food – among other things.

Honorable Mention/Best Experimental Short:
“Crossing” (HP Comings, 2007, USA, 19 minutes) A look at crossing between the realms of “normality” and kink, exploring thoughts on negotiation and communication along the way.

CineKink Honorable Best Mentions:
“Office Mobius” (Seung Hyung Lee & Seungil Hwang, 2007, USA, 5 minutes)
Office lust in a round-about kind of way.

“Something About Nadia” (Erika Lust, 2007, Spain, 21 minutes)
Their stories overlapping one into the next, three women narrate the
uncontrollable desire they feel for the mysterious and seductive Nadia.

“Wash Me Clean” (Michael Immerman, 2008, USA, 30 minutes)
Trying to reignite the spark in their relationship by opening it up
sexually, a suburban married couple find themselves moving in dramatically
different directions.

“CineKink Select” – SPECIAL FESTIVAL AWARD FOR ARTISTIC INNOVATION
“Schwarzwald” (Richard Kimmel, 2007, USA, 59 minutes)
A rich, modern tapestry combining elements of Druidic ritual with the
passionate, leather-clad goings-on that transpire at NYC’s annual Black
Party, SCHWARZWALD follows the travails of the Black Prince as he is pursued
through the woods and kidnapped by the nefarious underlings of the conniving
Black Queen.

“CineKink Tribute”
- FESTIVAL AWARD FOR EXTRAORDINARY MAINSTREAM DEPICTION OF KINK &
SEX-POSITIVITY
Recognizing extraordinary depiction of kink and sex in mainstream film and
television, the annual CineKink Tribute was presented to the film
“Shortbus,” for its “frank, funny and human look at the inextricable role
sexuality plays in our day-to-day lives and the many flavors it can
exhibit.”

Released by ThinkFilm in 2006, “Shortbus” was written and directed by John
Cameron Mitchell and stars Sook-Yin Lee, Paul Dawson, Lindsay Beamish, PJ
DeBoy, Raphael Barker, Jay Brannan, Peter Stickles and Justin Bond.
Producers for the film were Howard Gertler, John Cameron Mitchell and Tim
Perell, along with executive producers Wouter Barendrecht and Alexis Fish.

schwarzwald1 Cinekink announces opening night selections

CineKink has announced the opening night selections for its fifth annual film festival, CineKink NYC, which is scheduled to unwind February 26-March 2, 2008. A trio of works by New York-based directors will be the centerpiece of the event’s Kick-Off Gala and Opening Night Screening taking place on Tuesday, February 26th, a pansexual celebration that will also feature music, live performances and a fundraising silent auction.

The key offering for the evening, Richard Kimmel’s SCHWARZWALD, is a rich, modern tapestry that combines elements of Druidic ritual with the passionate, leather-clad goings-on of NYC’s annual Black Party. Following the travails of the Black Prince as he is pursued through the forest and kidnapped by underlings of the conniving Black Queen, the film stars Buck Angel, the world famous female-to-male transsexual porn star, along with a cast of literal thousands, and a continuous mix of music that culminates in what its creators are touting as “the movie you can dance to!”

“After introducing Buck Angel to New York audiences with our 2004 festival, we’re delighted he’ll be back on screen to open up this year’s proceedings,” said Lisa Vandever, Co-Founder and Director of CineKink. “And we’re especially thrilled that he’ll be wearing a spectacular blue frock through part of it – and cavorting in the woods with half-naked men through much of the rest. It’s a truly gorgeous piece of filmmaking.”

Also featured in the CineKink NYC opening night line-up is Leah Meyerhoff’s TEAM QUEEN, a colorful music video for the group Triple Creme that features some of the best in New York burlesque in a gender-bending, fire-breathing, tassel-twirling, post-punk rock ‘n roll extravaganza.

And rounding out the selections, A DOG’S TALE, a first-time directorial offering from photographer Steven Speliotis, is a sensuous and layered reverie on control and submission, longing and desire.

“We didn’t set out to highlight New York directors necessarily, that was just a happy accident,” continued Vandever. “We knew we wanted to do something splashy for our fifth annual kick off and we were looking for works that would hold up to presentation in a party environment.”

SCHWARZWALD’s Richard Kimmel is primarily a theater director, writer and producer, with experience in creating, in addition to the live version of SCHWARZWALD, such performance events as “Pandora” and Jennifer Hudson’s New York concert debut “One Night Only.” He is also Executive Director of The Box, a venue on the city’s Lower East Side, and Artistic Director of Cannon Company, a performance ensemble.

TEAM QUEEN’s Leah Meyerhoff is currently pursuing a Master’s in Film at New York University. A Student Academy Awards finalist, Leah’s previous works have been a hit on the international film festival circuit and she is working on her first feature film.

The first-time director of A DOG’S TALE, Steven Speliotis, is an art and portrait photographer whose work has been exhibited in solo shows in New York and abroad, and is highlighted in the book “Asian Bondage.”

With over 70 selections set to screen over the course of the event, CineKink NYC will feature a specially-curated program of films and videos that cuts across orientations to celebrate and explore a wide diversity of sexuality. In addition to screenings, the event will also feature a short film competition, audience choice awards, presentations, parties and a closing afterglow celebration.

The full program line-up for CineKink NYC, as well as additional details on the kick-off gala and advance tickets for the festival, will be available online beginning Monday, February 4th.

“The really alternative film festival”
February 26 – March 2, 2008

Presented by CineKink, an organization dedicated to the recognition and encouragement of sex-positive and kink-friendly depictions in film and television, CineKink NYC is seeking films and videos, of any length and genre, that celebrate and explore the wide diversity of sexuality. We’re looking to blur some boundaries and will be considering offerings drawn from both Hollywood and beyond, explicit or not, with works ranging from documentary to drama, camp comedy to hot porn – and everything in between.

Cutting across orientations, topics covered at CineKink have included – but are by no means limited to – BDSM, leather and fetish, swinging, non-monogamy and polyamory, roleplay and gender bending. Or, frankly, given the current moralistic climate, as long as it involves consenting adults, just about anything celebrating sex as a right of self-expression is welcome for consideration. (Far be it from us to define “kink” – if you think your work might make sense in this context, please send it along!)

Scheduled for its fifth annual appearance February 26-March 2, 2008, the specially curated CineKink NYC will also feature a short film competition, audience choice awards, presentations, parties and a gala kick-off, with a national screening tour to follow.

There are hundreds of panel submissions. There’s a panel picker to help you select and vote for your favorites, but I’ve made it easy for you to vote for these (registration required), and send some really smart bloggers and pals (Elizabeth, Lux Nightmare, Cory Silverberg, Rachel Kramer Bussel, Chris Hall, Lisa Vandever, Audacia Ray and Violet Blue) who write and think about sex and sexuality to the conference:

Voting is currently scheduled to end at 11:59 pm on Friday, September 21. Please go register and vote. And please help spread the word, and get the vote out.

I want to go. . . so many conferences, so little time. I’m planning on going to Arse Elektronica and Sex 2.0.

ABOUT CINEKINK
Now in its fourth season, CineKink is an annual film festival and national screening tour that celebrates and explores the wide diversity of sexuality. Presented by CineKink, an organization dedicated to the recognition and encouragement of kink-positive depictions in film and television, works showcased by the festival range from documentary to drama, camp comedy to hot porn – and everything in between.

Lisa Vandever, Co-Founder & Director of the Cinekink film series, blogs at CineKinkster.

When did you start blogging?

I started a personal blog about a year-and-a-half ago, right before I got married, to serve as a virtual scrap-book and touch upon on everything that was going on at the time. I launched the official CineKink blog late last summer, just as we were beginning to gear up for our annual film festival. I’d been kicking the idea around for awhile, then got the final nudge when I was asked to guest blog about my CineKink experiences over at The Reeler, an NYC film blog. That became the subject of my first post as “CineKinkster.”

What do you like about blogging?

In theory, I’d say the immediacy of it – “in theory” because I often find myself being as editorially compulsive as I do when writing for other media. (See, I just went back and tweaked the preceding sentence twice. And it’s still not right!) But it is really gratifying to have a thought, put it into words and toss it out into the world within the next few moments. (Or next few hours, depending on how compulsive I’m feeling and how many links I’m referencing.)

In terms of CineKink, I also love having the extra space to touch upon things that might be a little unwieldy for our regular email updates, or that aren’t directly related to our programming but might be of interest to our audience, generally anything at the intersection of sex and film/television.

Is blogging a major or minor way of connecting to other people for you?
My personal blog, which is on LiveJournal, has definitely become a way for me to feel connected. Since I don’t work in a bustling office, my “friends list” serves as my water cooler, where I can check in for a bit of contact and gossip. Then post my own occasional tidbit and compulsively hit refresh until I get at least a comment or two.

The CineKink blog is much less interactive and feels more like me pushing information out into the black void. That might partly be a result of the CineKinkster voice, a kind of royal “we” that I co-opted from Defamer and such. It’s fun for the most part, especially if I’m feeling light and snarky, but it doesn’t generally inspire conversation. The only time I’ve ever sparked a number of comments was when I (we?) posted about Ann Coulter and her dominatrix-y ways.

Where’s your blog? Do you use a free hosted service (Blogger, WordPress, Livejournal, AOL, Google Pages, etc.) or do you have your own domain and web server?
CineKinkster is through Blogger, though it’s actually hosted on the CineKink domain and server. I chose it because it seemed geared towards a relatively low level of technical competence (i.e. me). It was a breeze to set up and has been absolutely great so far, but I do keep separate archives of all of my posts, just in case.

What do you do to promote your blog or your writing (using tags in your post, blog roll, del.icio.us , Digg, Pingoat)?
Now that Blogger enables them, I’ve recently started adding tags, though I still need to add them to my archives. I use Feedburner to make the blog available in basically any subscription format. I run a CineKink community on LiveJournal, then post back from there to CineKinkster to up my Technorati links. I submit to various blog carnivals whenever I have a relevant post (yay, Viviane’s Sex Carnival!). I push links to the CineKink page on MySpace and include them wherever I can in our email updates.

Mostly, though, I’m still just getting up to speed on much of this – and look forward to your workshop for help in sussing it all out. That, along with – what’s it called – how to “monetize”?

The Saloon is ONE year old! Lots braved the abominable cold. We had the honor of being served by Sissy Maid Stephanie (here’s an 2004 Eroszine article about her). Thank you for arranging the introduction, Lolita.

There was lots to celebrate – Madeline’s upcoming birthday, winning the Dirtyspoke Award (with 45 Carnivalista present), and the Saloon’s one year birthday. As enriching as having a blog and being part of various online communities is, there’s nothing like real face time and conversation.

Those shown here are our public friends. That’s because the folks off camera were busy chatting, chewing, snogging, tickling and spanking. I’ll let those who were there tell you what happen. I don’t kiss and tell, you know.

Yes, we watched the Super Bowl. And it almost turned into a sex party, but then the chicken delivery guy showed up. Really.
