Last week I attended the TES Bondage SIG, for a presentation by Barbara Nitke’s go-to rope rigger, Mac K. He suspended Besu in  a beautiful asymmetrical suspension and gave this talk.  This is the first part, but more to come. - Viv

Smart Balls by Fun Factory are made from “Elastomed” skin-friendly coated material on the outside with small weighted balls inside that move and vibrate with the motions of your body. They come in many juicy colors; I received Pistachio, which looks so lovely I want to eat them up. I have never had a product that I didn’t like from Fun Factory as they manufacture high quality sex toys from the best body-friendly materials. I have used other types of balls before including Ben-wa Balls. These balls all have the same basic function, which is to enhance kegel exercises and promote PC muscle health in women. Some people find that they have also a stimulating effect, but I have never found them arousing, only interesting in the way they vibrate.

Smart balls are much larger than ordinary Ben-wa balls or beautiful Luna Beads by Lelo, and for that reason may be a bit challenging for women with small vaginas. Using lots of lube and slow insertion should solve that problem. The balls are attached together by a sinewy elastomer string and are meant to be inserted one after the other. I had no problem getting the first ball inserted, but the second one was a bit harder, as the top ball didn’t seem to want to push further inside and my fingers were slippery. I did finally get both balls inside however. They filled me pretty completely and like I said before felt interesting as I moved around. The texture was not bad. I did notice them inside me, but they were not uncomfortable. I did a bit of belly-dancing and the balls did vibrate much more with hip gyrations, but again the sensation was a subtle fluttering.

For doing kegel exercises I found them to be amazing. Smarts Balls are like barbells for your vagina which increases resistance and gives you something to squeeze around. Kegels exercises are recommended for women to enhance their PC muscle and overall vagina health (see my article on PC Health and Kegels). You can actually wear these balls out in public and do your kegels through-out the day if so inclined. Although, for me my PC muscles are fairly well toned and just simple movements would involuntarily push them out, which reminds me of a stripper I saw once at a bar who could do amazing things with ping-pong balls.

The balls are removed fairly easily via a retrieval string and the sensation is much nicer than going in, reminding me somewhat of anal beads.

I wouldn’t recommend these as an orgasm toy, but by doing regular kegels with these you will improve the intensity and control of your orgasms.

This week marks my fourth blogoversary.

One Life, Take Two began as stories I wrote to amuse my drinking buddy Audacia, relating how curious sex and dating seemed after the demise of my long marriage, particularly as a single father to three young children. After a year of finding my love life in her inbox, Audacia persuaded me to start blogging. I didn’t know what blogs were, really, so she sat me down at my computer, and we turned my emails into the first entries on this blog.

At first, I wrote into a void, not sure that anyone would read what I posted. Then, very quickly, I had a readership that grew exponentially as I continued publishing. Writing had the unforeseen consequence of introducing me to new friends and—to my astonishment—lovers; many would subsequently start blogs of their own. I made introductions among the new people in my life and helped to foster more friendships. Now and then, I rediscovered romance and love. Now and then, I endured blog dramas as jealous lovers stalked one another online and other bloggers initiated puerile rivalries.

I learned along the way that that this was all part and parcel of a niche demimonde that revised Andy Warhol’s aphorism—in the future we inherited, everyone is famous to fifteen people.

For the past few years, I’ve marked my blogoversary by republishing my first post. Reading it now, I am struck by the wonder and excitement I felt in spending a weekend with a woman who seemed, incredibly, to feel passionate about being with me. A year and a half out my marriage, I was still surprised that anyone would find me desirable. I was no less surprised to find that readers connected to my efforts to put the revelations of this new life into words.

This year, I’m not republishing my initial post. Sex is off my blog for now, as I am dragged back into my marriage as my ex pursues her second bid to gain full custody of our children. She was resigned to joint custody after our divorce. Years later, armed with her discovery of my blog, she seeks to prove that my sexuality makes me an unfit parent.

Per the judge’s order, we have now entered into a phase in which each member of our family must undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Initially, the psychiatric evaluations were to be limited to the parents, but now the children are to be evaluated as well. I was initially dismayed by this change, as I hate for the children to be any more directly affected by the custody case than they unavoidably have been. However, as they case continues into its fifth month, the strain on the children has been showing. It’s good that they each have an opportunity to talk with a neutral party about their feelings about the anxieties and tensions of enduring a second custody fight. Having already met with the court-ordered psychiatrist for three hours, I’m comfortable to have the children discuss their feelings privately in this context, apart from other family members.

The end is not yet in sight. I’ve been told to expect the case to continue until at least April, perhaps until summer, by which time it will have been underway for a year.

There is good news to report. The judge’s order directed that the costs of the psychiatric evaluation be borne by the city and state, not by my family. Further, the evaluations will not require as many sessions as was originally predicted. This relieves great burdens in the expense of time and money, meaning that I will not be seeking support for the evaluations in my legal defense fund.

Even as we approach the end of the first decade of the 21st century, there is still a large gap in people’s minds when they think about sexuality as it relates to people who are disabled, whether cognitively or physically. While some studies have been performed regarding the potential for differently-abled people to lead satisfying sexual lives, in which satisfying seems to center around the ability to orgasm, very little has been written about the experiences involving the sexualities and experiences of people who identify as handicapped/disabled/differently-abled, as well as their partners.

People of all ability levels are sexual beings. Sex is hard enough to navigate and negotiate when one fits in with society’s notions of what a sexual being is, but once you add in the concept of ability, it can become quite challenge. This anthology, Sexual Ability, seeks to bring forward the stories, challenges and experiences of differently-abled people and their partners, putting a face on the trials that so many valuable members of our society must face. By sharing the experiences of the disabled community in relation to sexuality, Sexual Ability hopes to challenge people’s viewpoints, foster discussion and conversation, and open doors towards a shift in the social constructions surrounding sexuality and disability.

Essay submissions should be well thought out, and written in a scholarly manner. Acceptable submissions can be in the form of short research papers, non-fictional accounts of personal experience(s), discussions on issues regarding sexuality and disability, etc. Fictional pieces/erotica will NOT be considered. Each author may submit a total of two (2) essays for consideration.

Some topics that authors might consider (but are certainly not limited to) include;

*Coming out to a new partner and facilitating the “disability discussion”
*Reclaiming words surrounding sexuality and disability, such as “crip,” “handicapped,” etc.
*Issues within the medical community; talking with doctors about being sexually active when you’re differently-abled.
*Having to create new sex techniques, positions, conversations, or having to re-define the traditional definitions of sex, etc.
*Disabled and queer, disabled and of color, disabled and religious; reconciling multiple identities alongside sexuality.
*Re-conceiving your sexuality after loss of previous abilities, either solo or with a partner.
*Ability and kink; negotiating within the BDSM community when differently-abled.
*Sexuality and ability through out different cultural experiences.
*Portrayal of disabled people in the media (film, TV, art, advertisements, etc) and the connection to sexuality.
*Disability rights; the fight for them, and how they affect sexuality amongst the disabled community.
*Birth control/contraception; getting it, using it, adapting it, as well as pregnancy/adoption/abortion.
*Creating your identity as a disabled person who is a sexual being; how did it evolve, and what was your journey.
*Any other subjects you feel cover the topic of sexuality and (dis)ability.

By March 31, 2009, please send:

*Your 2,000 – 6,000 word submission, as a word document attachment. It should be titled as such: SubmissionTitleAuthorName.doc (example: SexualAbility.ShannaKatz.Doc). Submissions must be received in 12 point Times New Roman font and sent in via Word documents (other files and cut/pasted text will not be accepted).

* Your complete contact information, including legal name, pen name (if you have one), phone number, email, address, and website (if you have one).

*A 50-100 word biography about yourself.

I’m a bad gay myself. I keep sleeping with boys. I’m a bad straight. I keep on fucking, and not getting married. I don’t think I’ll ever get married, even though I almost did when I was 23. I don’t think I’ll ever be gay or straight. Bisexual is a term that barely even fits. I gave up on this notion that I’d only ever want to sleep with or love someone of “my gender” or its “opposite” a long time ago. I don’t even know what the “opposite” of my sex is anymore. I forgot before I even moved to San Francisco.

So for lack of a better word, queerdo will do.

And if I have a generation — I barely have one of those, straddling X and Y as my birthday does — we’re the queerdoes. We don’t fit. We grew up with the internet. We barely had to come out. We’re hyper and more likely to get our community organizing chops from teaching our baby queer friends how to have safer sex with a latex glove, how to sneak into a dyke bar, how to cruise boys on the subway, than how to organize a rally. We learned what we know about politics from fucking and keeping our communities together amidst all the fucking. We’re spastic and driven and can do eight things at once.

ALBANY - A transgender individual should be allowed to legally assume a new name to reflect her identity as a woman, a state appeals court ruled Wednesday.

In Matter of Earl William Golden III, 504992, the Appellate Division, Third Department, reversed the finding of Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey A. Tait of Broome County. Justice Tait had dismissed Ms. Golden’s petition in May 2008 to formally change her name to Elisabeth Whitney Golden because the change from a traditional male name to a female name “is fraught with possible confusion.”

The decision will be published Thursday.

Justice Tait said that no matter how “sensitive the Court is to petitioner’s personal goals,” he was wary of “confusing or misleading the public in its dealings with petitioner.” The justice noted that Ms. Golden was free to exercise her common-law right to take any name she chooses as long as “fraud, misrepresentation, or interference with the rights of others” is not involved.

Justice Tait also noted in his ruling that Ms. Golden had declined to present medical or psychological evidence that she is undergoing an “irreversible or permanent” gender transition - a showing that Ms. Golden argued is not required by New York Civil Rights Law in a memorandum of law before the Third Department.

Justice Tait issued an ex parte order denying Ms. Golden’s petition.

Presiding Justice Anthony V. Cardona, writing for a unanimous appeals panel, held that under common law “a person may change his or her name at will so long as there is no fraud, misrepresentation or interference with the rights of others.” In addition, Civil Rights Law §63 empowers courts to authorize name changes if satisfied that “the petition is true, and that there is no reasonable objection to the change of name proposed,” the judge noted.

In the instant case, Justice Cardona wrote that “possible confusion” was not a sufficient basis for Justice Tait’s denial of Ms. Golden’s petition since “confusion is a normal concomitant of any name change.”

“Thus, under the particular circumstances herein and in the absence of factors inferring ‘fraud, misrepresentation or interference with the rights of others’ . . . we conclude that the petition should be granted,” Justice Cardona wrote.

In sending the petition back to Justice Tait, the Third Department directed that the language in the order changing Ms. Golden’s name should specify that the “name change order cannot be used as evidence that the gender of petitioner has been changed from male to female.”

Justices Edward O. Spain, Anthony J. Carpinello, Bernard J. Malone Jr. and Leslie E. Stein joined the ruling.

According to the decision, Ms. Golden first sought the name change in October 2007 to reflect her preference to be identified as a female.

Ms. Golden, 57, has been married since 1980. In her petition, she said she has been using the name “Elisabeth” in her personal life since 2004 and professionally since 2006.

Ms. Golden was represented by Franklin H. Romeo of the Manhattan-based Sylvia Rivera Law Project, which seeks to protect the right of self-determination of transgender and other “gender non-conforming” people. Mr. Romeo did not return a call for comment.

Lori Drew abused her power as a knowledgeable adult by leveraging her adult knowledge of psychology to humiliate and torment a teen girl. Put another way, Lori Drew engaged in psychological and emotional child abuse. Child abuse includes the psychological or emotional mistreatment of a child. Unfortunately, most legal statutes focus on sexual and physical abuse and neglect because emotional abuse is very hard to substantiate and prosecute. But realistically, she should’ve been tried with child abuse, not a computer crime.

The fact that technology was involved is of little matter. Sure, she couldn’t have said those things to Megan’s face, but she could’ve hired a boy to do so. (How many movies have been made of boys being roped into teen girls’ humiliation schemes?) The crime she should be convicted of should have nothing to do with technology. She should be tried (and convicted) of psychologically abusing a child.

Why do we focus on the technology? Is it because it is the thing that we don’t understand? Or is it because if we were actually forced to contend with the fact that Drew was abusing a minor to protect her own that we’d have to face our own bad habits in this regard? How many of you have done something problematic to protect your child? I suspect that, at the end of the day, many parents could step in Lori Drew’s shoes and imagine themselves getting carried away in an effort to protect their daughter from perceived injustices. Is that why we’re so centered on the technology?
