Ah. Strauss & Gershoff...seriously I appreciate you other work! Both of you have done wonderful things for the world of social science research, particularly in the area of family violence. I love you, and am seriously angry at you for what you are pulling with these archaic Freudian notions of 'masochism' and the physical act of a parent spanking his/her child. Get your paradigms straight! You need to review the collections of studies published in the past 7 years on BDSM...your work is clearly rejecting some of these ideas around the inclusion from a kinky perspective...without citing the research or their overarching sexual worldview. I challenge you to...MEET bdsm communities as they get together and share stories how stigmatizing research and social exclusion such as yours has made their lives harder than it needs to be, ...GAWK and how kinky couples who have extraordinary power-laden sex and still love each other profoundly, sans violence, ...REVEL at kinky communities ability to navigate, define, and enforce sexual consent at a level that conservative Christian groups (let alone drunken college bars) can only wish they could accomplish. Maybe you should think about this before you go to the textbook editors.

So, if I understand this correctly, not only do parents hit and spank their children out of anger and frustration (which is bad enough already) they have a problem with their children enjoying the activity? I would say kudos to the human psyche for finding a way to turn a very Bad Thing into a very Good Thing, as long as it's not done out of malice, of course.
