Traditional thinking was that when it comes to sexual function, a partial (or what is called subtotal) hysterectomy, one where the cervix is not removed, was preferred over a total hysterectomy (where both uterus and cervix are removed).
A new review published in the current issue of The Cochrane Library, reveals that the traditional thinking in this area could be wrong. The journal is a publication of The Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization that evaluates research in all aspects of health care. Systematic reviews draw evidence-based conclusions about medical practice after considering both the content and quality of existing trials on a topic.
