Reuters is reporting that US advisors have unanimously recommended the first vaccine for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which causes most cervical cancer for FDA approval.
Called Gardasil, and manufactured by Merck, the vaccine is scheduled for final review by the FDA in early June. If approved, it is thought that Gardasil could have a major impact on reducing cervical cancer. As reported by Reuters, Dr. Bobbie Gostout, one of the advisors who speaks for the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists was quoted saying:
“Not since the introduction of the (Pap) test over a half a century ago has such an opportunity existed,” she told the panel. Pap tests, which can catch precancerous and cancerous cells early, cut U.S. cervical cancer deaths by 74 percent.
